Kansas City Should Trade For Tony Gonzalez

Ron TepperMay 15, 2009

Do you remember when you were a kid and you did or said something you shouldn't? Sometimes you made statements like "do over" or "I take it back."

Well being a die-hard Kansas City Chief fan makes me wish I was a kid again.

When Kansas City traded Gonzalez to Atlanta for a second round pick in 2010, I was more than a bit angry.

Yes I know there was a lot of speculation, mostly through the press who often run at the mouth in the never ending search for the perfect story, but I never truly believed he was going anywhere.

I was wrong. So were the Chiefs for making this deal.

Let's shift from speculation to realization. I will now give you the reasons why this trade was unnecessary, and why I am to this day so upset.

1) Tony Gonzalez stated during the Herm Edwards era that he felt out of place in Herm's "youth movement" quest and wouldn't mind playing for a contender.

He made that statement once, and the press ran with the story. They actually have been running it ever since.

The truth is that Gonzalez was happier with the new management, and K.C. bringing in more veterans who Gonzalez has played against over the last decade like Mike Vrabel, Zach Thomas, and Bobby Engram certainly helped change his mind.

2) Scott Pioli said that Gonzalez never spoke to him with a request of a trade.

3) It wasn't a money issue. Kansas City is $40 million under the cap as we speak. Never has a team been so frugal since the Cincinnati Bengals 20 years ago.

4) It wasn't an age issue. Herm is gone. Pioli has just added four Vets who are all older than Gonzalez.

5) Compensation? A second round pick for a Hall of Famer with three more productive years left and a fan favorite to boot? Of course that second rounder is in 2010.

Look at Pioli's drafts over the recent years, as well as Carl Peterson's, and they are filled with second round busts. You are trading someone who is proven for an unknown entity. Not a smart move.

6) A ring? That's a joke.

Since when are the Atlanta Falcons a Super Bowl favorite? What are Atlanta's chances of winning the Super Bowl in the next three years?

Betting odds don't favor Gonzalez.

7) Trading Gonzalez leaves one more huge need that the Chiefs can add to their current list.

I might also bring up that they didn't get anyone in the draft that can make up part of his production. There aren't even players on the team itself.

8) If Gonzalez played all these years for New England, Pioli would be making a trade to obtain him. He encompasses every intangible that Pioli values. He is a "poster boy" of being a team player.

The real reason he's gone? It was a management decision.

Atlanta said, "We will give you a No. 3 this year or a No. 2 next year for him cut and dry." (Most people don't know that.)

I will not even attempt to get inside Scott Pioli's head.

Jason Taylor was just signed to a one year, $1.5 million deal. Of course there was the "Miami Discount," but wouldn't you think that a new GM who is not timid about bringing in veterans would take a flier on this guy?

At least show an interest, considering he has a team with the worst sack total in NFL history a year ago?

Now they are trying to force a team filled with players who fit a 4-3 defense into a 3-4.

Tamba Hali and Turk McBride at LB? Glenn Dorsey at DE? Enough already.

Boy, it's frustrating being a Kansas City Fan. I think I need an aspirin.
