Bills: Offensive Line a Major Question

John GrahamMay 14, 2009

After the departure of Derrick Dockery and Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters, the Buffalo Bills' offensive line is currently the largest question mark on the team.  In a division that features brutal nose tackles like New England's Vince Wilfork and New York's Kris Jenkins, it is imperative that the Bills improve up front.

Losing Jason Peters was a major hit for the team. On a squad that owner Ralph Wilson deems as not possessing enough talent, the Bills may have lost their most talented ball player. Conventional wisdom suggests that the Bills would have sought out a replacement in the draft.

However, the Bills neglected this position, and, instead, targeted guards with their first and second round picks.  They also added veteran talent in Center Geoff Hangartner through free agency.

Hangartner is expected to start right away and should be a major upgrade over Duke Preston.  Draft pick Eric Wood should be starting at guard come opening day.  Second round pick Andy Levitre will compete with Kirk Chambers for the opposite guard role.

Since the Bills have not replaced Peters, it is believed that right tackle Langston Walker will be moving to the left side of the line. Brad Butler would then move out to the right side to fill the gap.  Walker has some experience at left tackle, but he does not possess the athleticism and ability that Peters brought to the table.

Asides from the loss in talent, the Bills are hoping to start two rookies for the season.   Also, not one member of the offensive line will be playing at the same position as they did last year.

Offensive line play hinges on experience and continuity.  It may take the line several games—if not, more—to get to the level of play they will need to end the team's nine year playoff drought.
