NL East Power Rankings
Kevin McGuireMay 11, 2009
Time once again to update the weekly NL East Power Rankings.
Some major changes this week as we have a new top two teams, with the former top two each dropping down two spots.
Previous Power Rankings
(17-13; 4) The New York Mets are the hottest team in the division entering this week and are riding a seven game winning streak. On their recent streak the Mets have swept two game series' in Atlanta and at home against the Phillies. Johan Santana continues to be a beast and was fortunate enough to strike out enough Phillies to waste a terrific outing by Chan Ho Park last week. The Mets have a three game home series against the Braves before going on their west coast trip at the end of the week.
(17-15; 3) The Marlins are on an up and down roller coaster right now but they continue to have the best record within the NL East at 13-7, which accounts for something a little more in the power rankings here. After a three game road trip to Milwaukee the Marlins have a long home stand coming up against the Manny-less Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Rays.
(15-16; 1) The Braves probably wish they could play the Phillies more often after their start against them this season. The Braves have now taken two straight series victories in Philadelphia, perhaps seeking revenge for being swept by the Phillies in Atlanta last season. The Braves have used timely hitting to come away with some games recently and now have Brian McCann back in the lineup. If the Braves can get some more solid starting pitching look out.
(15-14; 2) The Phillies had a better week from their starting pitching all around, except for Jamie Moyer, but still find themselves 4-6 in their last ten games. They lost a two game set in New York and returned home to drop two of three against Atlanta over the weekend. Jimmy Rollins continues to struggle and the bullpen could use the addition of J.C. Romero for the clutch outs in the seventh inning. Brad Lidge has also been rocky, although he has been used in a few non-save opportunities.
(10-19; 5) The Nationals made some progress on the field, giving the Dodgers their first home loss of the season on the same day it was announced that Manny Ramirez would be suspended for 50 games. The Nationals are now 6-4 in their last ten games, but still find themselves on the bottom of the division looking up. The Nationals finish up a west coast road trip in San Francisco before returning home against the Phillies for the weekend.
