Game Recap: Padres 4 @ Cubs 6 05/13/09

Patrick GaddyMay 13, 2009
The Cubs brought out the lumber in a 6-4 win over the Padres tonight in a 8 inning rain shortened game at Wrigley Field. Ted Lilly pitched 6.1 strong innings and Alfonso Soriano tied Craig Biggio for second all time in lead off home runs with his 53rd.

Three batters into the game Ted Lilly and his hanger were at it again. Adrian Gonzalez went deep in the top of the first for the second night in a row, once again with a man on, giving the Pads a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

Leading off the bottom of the first Soriano hit Chris Young's second pitch of the game deep to left field and into the night. The lead off home run was Soriano's 53rd of his career tying Craig Biggio for second all time. Ricky Henderson is baseballs all time leader with 82.

Ryan "Hulk" Theriot then stepped to the plate and hit the very next pitch from Young a couple rows deep into left center, just to the left of straight away center tying the game at 2 runs apiece. Theriot now has 5 home runs in 125 at bats. He had 5 career home runs in 1261 at bats coming into this season.

After Kosuke Fukudome struck out looking and D Lee flew out to center, Milton Bradley and Mike Fontenot drew back to back walks setting the stage for Geovony Soto. Soto has struggled mightily thus far this season. After getting ahead in the count, he drilled a single to left scoring Bradley and giving the Cubs a 3-2 lead after 1.

While Lilly seemed to settle down for the 4.1 innings, Young ran into trouble again in the third. After Derrek Lee flew out to lead off the inning, Milton Bradley reached on a bunt single the Padres let roll for what seemed 30 seconds. Bradley probably could have gotten a double out of it. Fontenot then struck out swinging, bringing Soto back to the plate. After taking the first pitch for a ball, Soto hit Young's second pitch deep to left and gone. A two run shot giving the Cubs a 5-2 lead.

Ted Lilly set the Padres down in order in the top of the fourth. After Lilly few out and Soriano grounded out, "Hulk" then stepped to the plate and promptly drilled his 2nd home run of the game, in as many at bats giving the Cubs a 6-2 lead.

While neither team did anything to mention in the 5th inning, Lilly ran into a little trouble in the top of the sixth. After getting David Eckstein to fly out to left leading off, he gave up his 2nd home run of the game to Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez third home run in the first two games of this series. This cut the lead to 6-3 and the Padres were not done yet. Chase Headley then doubled to right and Kevin Kouzmanoff follwed that with a single to center putting runners on first and third with one out. Lilly then got Nick Hundley to strike out looking and Brian Giles to fly out, ending the threat.

The Padres finished off the scoring by getting a run in the top of the eighth inning off Carlos Marmol. Marmol's control once again appeared to be somewhere besides Wrigley, giving up a run on two hits, a walk and throwing a wild pitch. Without the benefit of a double play, this game could have been much more nail biting.

Cubs at the plate

Alfonso Soriano went 1-for-3 with a lead off home run. The 53rd of his career tying him for second all time with Craig Biggio.

Ryan Theriot
went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs. He also drew a walk and is now batting .296 on the year with 5 home runs, tying his career total coming into the season.

Kosuke Fukudome was 1-for-4 with a single. Kosuke has been on fire lately so an off game should have been expected at some point. Still hitting .330 on the season and not looking anything like the guy we seen the second half of last season.

Milton Bradley was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Milton laid down a beautiful bunt for his only hit of the night but did draw another walk and scored both times. This guy has one of the best eyes on any hitter in the league.

Derrek Lee went 0-for-4 and continues to struggle. D Lee did hit one ball hard driving it to the deepest part of the park just missing a BIG fly. Once he gets his timing down, i really think he is going to take off.

Geovony Soto Geo was 2-for-3 with a home run and three rbi's. Was really nice to see Geo have a couple of nice at bats and coming through with some big hits. Hopefully this is HUGE for his confidence and helps to get his bat going again.

Ryan "Farney" Freel was 0-for-3 at the plate in his first Cubs start. He did make a nice play in the field cutting off Soriano's throw in the top of the eighth inning and catching Brian Giles in a run down to end the inning and eventually the game.

Mike Fontenot continues to struggle at the plate. Although he did draw a walk, he was 0-for-2 and is now batting .218 on the season. Where oh where are you at Rami?

Cubs on the mound

Ted Lilly once again was his bull dog self. After giving up a two run home run to Adrian Gonzalez in the top of the first, Ted settled down and didn't allow another run until Gonzalez homered again in the sixth inning. Now 5-2 with a 3.27 ERA on the year, Lilly has been the Cubs most consistent pitcher. IMO

Angel Guzman continues to be solid giving up one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Carlos Marmol gets credit for the saved because the game finished after the top of the eighth. Kind of a freebie. He control was once again erratic at best and without the benefit of a double play in the inning could have been in big trouble. ERA now a robust 4.24 on the season.

Series Record 2-0
Season Record 19-14
Road Record 9-8
Home Record 10-6
