Around the League with Brandon Jacobs, Brett Favre, Kevin Smith and more

William Del PilarMay 13, 2009

I must say it, if you haven’t read a blog on Brett Favre or may be just sick of it all, do read one more! I’m extremely hard on my writers when it comes to setting up opinion with fact. That is, back up the facts with sound analytics.

I say that because any moron can twist statistics for their own view. Just ask the video game industry about Jack Thompson!

Ryan R. Bonini, KFFL General Manager, has written, I think, his best blog ever, “Can Brett Favre still play? Can he win?” I hope you enjoy it … after reading mine!

Let’s take a look, around the league:

Brandon Jacobs about Braylon Edwards, “We don’t want him.

My Take:

Jacobs was politically correct when he spoke about Cleveland Browns wideout Braylon Edwards by making statements such as “he’s a great guy and a great player,” but in the end the Giants don’t throw enough and Edwards is not “New York.”

In the end, I believe Jacobs knows Edwards can become a potential locker room malcontent. Edwards is a receiver who complains about the quarterback yet can’t hold onto a pass to help his team win!

Remember, Eli Manning is not a quarterback who is a vocal and will not defend himself. The contrary, his personality is one that keeps it all in.

Matt Ryan on Tony Gonzalez, “I’ve been very impressed.

My Take:

In a great piece by D. Orlando Ledbetter, who I’ve followed the last few years, newly acquired tight end Tony Gonzalez stated his head was spinning in learning the new offense.

However, quarterback Matt Ryan did admit throwing more passes his way. It makes sense as he says Gonzo is a new toy and in the end, having him as an alternative will only make Roddy White and, specifically, Michael Jenkins much better fantasy receivers.

This trade is great news for all the skill positions in Atlanta. Don’t let anyone say otherwise!

My Take:

WOW! Remember, “you never say never!” That stated, I don’t know. It’s a great report by Carlos Monarrez that I saw in an e-mail to me. The Lions lost five games by three or more touchdowns! Can you say blowout?

What I did like, despite the fact he’s one year removed from his rookie season, Smith did not hesitate to criticize the team to help them improve. Leaders do that!

However, for more ridiculous predictions, Monarrez lists some of Smith’s 2008 predictions. I have to add, “Mr. Smith, I have some land in Florida for sale!”

My Take:

Thomas Jones has done this before, and without class, I might add! This is not surprising or shocking.

His agent Drew “I’ll tell my client to do anything for money,” Rosenhaus is notorious for making his players holdout.

At least that’s how I’ve seen it over the last decade! Rosenhaus wants you to believe Jones is only receiving a paltry $900,000 this year in pay for all the hard work Jones has done.

The truth is that Jones signed a $20 million contract and has already taken home $13 million. Ironically, he’s crying similar blues as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin, another Rosenhaus client!

Washington? Well, he’s unrestricted eligible after this year. What gets me is that he believes he’s worth Maurice Jones-Drew money? Heck, Darren Sproles isn’t worth the $6.621 million he will see with his one-year deal.

When push came to shove, Sproles could not put the team on his back. For that type of money you better, because if you can’t, you have hurt your team by locking up dollars that could have gone to depth and other areas of need, not a small overachieving running back that is only good for special teams play.

Sadly, that is Sproles and Washington in a nutshell! Both Jones and Washington need to get into camp, because, according to Mark Cannizzaro (article writer), the team is beginning to get upset!

My Take:

This is from a story that focuses on Favre’s shoulder and x-rays sent to the Minnesota Vikings and Bus Cook, his agent, stating he knew nothing of it. I’m here to comment on the quote. It’s too funny!

One conspiracy theory has Favre and Cook creating this circus eventually to say they’ll play because of the fans demanding it.

Adding the warning, how Favre is the only one who can take the Vikings deep! Whether true or not that’s what the hoopla has been all about.

If he does come back, I believe he will come in and ask for one of the largest one-year contracts ever made for a football player.

Sure, there are cap issues, but we’re talking great marketing and promotion here by Cook and Favre with potential desperation by the Vikings.
