Luiz Gustavo Will Suffer from Transfer to Wolfsburg over Arsenal
Luiz Gustavo wanted to find a better situation for the upcoming season, but unfortunately he will be worse off than he started.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder found himself in a crowded lineup this summer with the addition of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona. According to Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC, Gustavo asked to be transferred to find a place where he can play "first-team football."
This left two primary suitors for the Brazilian player: Arsenal and Wolfsburg.
While the Premier League club valued Gustavo at £14 million, David Hytner of The Guardian reports that Wolfsburg completed the deal with a £17 million bid. It appears that the midfielder has agreed to the deal and will move to the fellow Bundesliga club.
Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated provided the same insight on the move while also pointing out more disappointments for Arsenal:
This begs the question of which place would provide the better situation for Gustavo.
On one hand, this will be a good opportunity for guaranteed starts, as the mid-table club needs all the help it can get. He will also be able to stay in a league that he is comfortable in, which is a good thing.
However, Gustavo is set to get a wake-up call stating that the rest of the league is not that much fun. Bayern dominated the Bundesliga last season, totaling 91 points in 34 matches. Borussia Dortmund was second with only 66 points, and Wolfsburg finished in 11th place.
The holding midfielder will struggle playing with weaker teammates, as his ability as a passer will be wasted on players who cannot finish with consistency.
Still, the biggest difference is the level of competition. Gustavo is looking to gain exposure and make himself as strong of a player as possible before the 2014 World Cup to ensure his spot on Brazil's national team.
With his new club, he will not be seen much and will suffer without regular competition from the world's best opponents.
While Wolfsburg cannot offer any European competition, Arsenal are set to compete in the Champions League after a top-four finish in the EPL. The league play alone provides better challenges on a weekly basis than that of the Bundesliga.
Additionally, Gustavo would get a chance to showcase his ability working with talented offensive players like Santi Cazorla, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud. It would certainly help him better prepare to play alongside Neymar, Oscar and Fred with Brazil.
The 26-year-old player was willing to go anywhere that he could find playing time. Unfortunately, this has left him in a poor situation and he will be left thinking about what could have been at Arsenal.
