Who Will Give Michael Vick a Second Chance?

Erin McLaughlinMay 12, 2009

As we all know Michael Vick will soon be released from prison.

Then he will likely have a meeting with Roger Goodell to discuss being reinstated. In all likelihood, that will be granted.

The thing I find funny is that I hear all the ESPN analysts saying he is a changed man and deserves a second chance.

What I want to ask all of them is, "would you give it to him?"

Let's be honest going down this road creates great risk. Not only that, but also his NFL potential is clearly a boom or bust.

He is an exceptional athlete. There is no doubt about that. However, he never really did learn how to play quarterback in the NFL. Now a team would have to hope he can and also deal with the reality of wondering what shape he is in.

So if I am a GM, this is my thinking—Sure he is an exceptional talent and deserves a second chance. However, playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right. He messed up that privilege once before. I am also aware of the boom or bust potential on the field.

So I say you deserve a second chance and I hope somebody else gives it to you.

Atlanta technically still has his rights but have put them on the trading block. So far there have been no takers.

Let's go division by division to see who may be interested in him.

AFC East

There is no team in this division that would have any interest.

AFC South

Jacksonville and Houston would be possibilities. However, both of those teams will probably give their current starters (David Garrad and Matt Schaub) one more year. So Vick would likely be the back up initially.

AFC North

The Bengals have had enough legal drama on their team. They don't need more. No other team in the division will want him.

AFC West

The Raiders do make logical sense based on past history. However, if they go down this road it will be a year from now. The jury is still out on Jamarcus Russell.

I also don't see him fitting into a Josh McDaniels system.

NFC East

The only team that may have any interest is Washington. For some reason, I don't see that one happening.

NFC South

No way will Atlanta trade him to a division rival. Besides none would be interested anyway.

NFC North

Bears and Packers are set at QB.

The Lions are committed to Matthew Stafford.

The Vikings are currently pursuing a relatively well known older QB. If they are unable to land him than Vick could be a possibility.

NFC West

The Rams are certainly a possibility. The 49ers could be but I don't think so. Mike Singletary is a hard nosed defensive minded head coach. He wants a QB to manage the game and not lose it. So, he will think about Vick for about two minutes.

Therefore, there are only about four teams out of 32 that may be interested. Having said that, it only takes one.

So the next question is what does Atlanta do if they can't trade him? They could bring him back as the back up and have a Wildcat package for him. However, that may not be good for Matt Ryan.

Ryan had a great rookie year but is still a young developing QB. I think he will be a great pro, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had a bit of a sophomore slump. That would make having Vick behind him a problem.

Another question to consider is do wide receivers want him. I wouldn't because I would never put up Pro Bowl numbers as a receiver.

There have been so many questions and debates about whether or not he deserves another chance. The real question is who will give it to him.

If you were a GM would you?
