Fantasy Baseball Tonight: May 11
Jhonny Peralta had his second consecutive three-hit game and now has 10 hits in his last five, bringing his average up to .246—much closer to where we expected him to be.
Obviously, we would love to see him show more power, but I believe that will come soon. Peralta is available in many leagues, and I would try to find a spot for him on my roster if I needed any help at shortstop—or even just a bench spot for him to sit in until he is totally back.
Adam Rosales is really starting to come into his own. After struggling a bit after being called up, he has started to hit over the last four days.
He had three Monday and fell just a triple shy of the cycle. Rosales is making impressive contact and nearly had two four-baggers Monday. In a perfect season, he could get up to 20 home runs, but more likely he will fall in the 15-to-17 range.
He could also get more than 10 steals as well.
Gavin Floyd has had a rough last four starts, including his worst outing of the season Monday. Floyd only went five innings and gave up a whopping eight runs.
He also walked three and struck out three. He has now given up 22 runs in his last four starts, and his strikeouts have been dropping. I still think it is a bit too soon to give up on Floyd, but he is definitely worth a closer look to see if he belongs on your roster.
Omir Santos has been playing great since being called up. Monday Santos had just one hit, but drove in two runs.
In his 17 games he is hitting .302. And though he has just one homer, he has driven in 10 runs.
He actually never showed any real power in the minors, and his batting average wasn’t great, but in the short term he is doing well. I can’t recommend adding him, but keep an eye on him to see if this success continues.
After starting the season 0-5 with an 8.16 ERA, Jose Contreras has been sent down to the minors. Jimmy Gobble has been called up to replace him, but I’m not sure how exciting that news is either.
According to reports, Bobby Cox flip-flopped his closer Mike Gonzalez with eighth inning man Rafael Soriano because of matchups Monday. The Phillies had three lefties up in the eighth.
Though looking Gonzalez's his stats, it doesn’t make much sense. The southpaw has a 7.36 ERA against lefties. Either way, it looks like Gonzalez is still the man in the ninth.
Injury News
Josh Hamilton is ready to come off of the DL today. In a two-game rehab assignment, Hamilton was 2-5 with a double and three walks.
It appears to be safe to get him back into your lineup. If you are very conservative, you can wait one more day, but it doesn’t appear necessary.
Dustin Pedroia looks like he will be back in the lineup for the Red Sox on Wednesday and will miss just the one game. Manager Terry Francona has called it “very realistic” that he would be back in there in the second game against the Angels, but nothing is set in stone.
Travis Hafner looks like he will need a rehab assignment after all, but the good news is he could start that soon. Hafner had been hoping to come off the disabled list when he was eligible Thursday, but that isn’t going to happen. It certainly appears his return isn’t that far off though.
Chris Carpenter is due to throw off a mound twice next week, and after the second one Friday, his next course of action will be determined. After that, he could have to continue on the bullpen mound or go on a minor league rehab assignment. But it is possible that he would be able to return, as well.
The original projection for Carpenter’s injury was four to eight weeks, it has been just under four weeks to this point.
