International Champions Cup 2013: Key Players Who Must Step Up in Round 1
Clubs must strike the right balance during the 2013 International Champions Cup. While they would like to make a deep run in the marquee preseason tournament, they don't want to overextend any players with the new campaign around the corner.
The increased spotlight as compared to normal preseason friendlies should allow certain players to shine. Since it's unknown how much the biggest stars will play throughout the event, others must step up for their squads to keep advancing toward the title.
With that in mind, let's examine three players who will probably face that preseason pressure in the opening round. For more information about the International Champions Cup, visit the tournament's official site.
Juan Mata (Chelsea)
Mata was a crucial part of the Chelsea attack last term, netting 20 goals and chipping in with 35 assists across all competitions. Despite that terrific production, the Spanish international has been involved in transfer talk throughout the summer.
The tournament serves as an opportunity for him to make a statement about his importance to the club. Starting with Chelsea's opener against Inter Milan, the playmaker should have plenty of space to work alongside a deep and talented Blues midfield.
Whether it's moving forward and showing off his finishing touch or relying solely on his creativity to create scoring chances, there's no reason he shouldn't be dominant. The open style of play should suit him perfectly and sets him up to dazzle new boss Jose Mourinho.
Isco (Real Madrid)
For Real Madrid to keep pace with La Liga rivals Barcelona, they need some players to rise to the occasion alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Co. in attack. One player capable of that is Isco.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is coming off a successful offseason. He helped lead the U-21 Spanish national team to the European Championship. Now, the Blancos hope he can carry that form into the new club campaign.
Real start their tournament against the Los Angeles Galaxy. It's the type of match Isco should be able to make a major impact in before the level of competition begins to rise. That's when the real test begins for the rising star.
Tim Howard (Everton)
Howard is first-choice goalkeeper for the United States and returns home for the International Champions Cup. This should provide even more motivation as he battles Joel Robles for the starting spot at Everton.
The veteran is coming off a season when his form dipped far too often, leaving the Toffees little choice but to bring in some competition. This event serves as his best chance to show why he deserves to remain the starter moving forward.
Juventus will be a tough test right out of the gate. The defending Serie A champions should be able to control the pace of play, which means plenty of action for Howard. If Everton are going to pull off an upset, the American must help lead the way.
