Mexico vs. Panama: Players to Watch in Semifinals Clash
After defeating Mexico for the first time ever and rolling over Cuba in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Gold Cup, Panama has to be feeling good about its chances against the Mexican side on Wednesday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Of course, there have been some developments for the Mexicans since their opening Gold Cup loss to Panama.
For one, Mexico has allowed just one goal while scoring six of its own in three matches since that loss. Secondly, Israel Jimenez has since been replaced by right back Miguel Layun. The 25-year-old has been a consistent threat in a spot where Jose Manuel de la Torre has had trouble finding consistency.
Here's a look at the players to watch in the Gold Cup semifinals clash between Mexico and Panama.
Gabriel Torres, Panama
Gabriel Torres is tied for the Gold Cup lead with five goals. The 24-year-old midfielder has done so in just three matches, scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory over Mexico, a goal in the win against Martinique and two goals against Cuba in the quarterfinals.
Torres scored those four goals against Mexico and Cuba in just seven shots.
A strong, fast player with a dangerous right foot and the ability to work the ball through tight spaces, Torres has the potential to be a game-changer again versus Mexico.
Marco Fabian, Mexico
Marco Fabian has scored three of Mexico's seven goals in the tournament. He scored those three goals in the first three matches for Mexico, despite taking only nine shots.
The 24-year-old midfielder wasn't considered the most dangerous player for Mexico headed into the Gold Cup, but he's been very important for the side with his ability to dash down the sideline or cut in for a scoring opportunity.
Miguel Layun, Mexico
As mentioned earlier, Miguel Layun has made Mexico an entirely different team since the loss to Panama because he has made a weak spot for Mexico a strength.
The 25-year-old has notched two assists in his last two matches. That included finding Raul Jimenez for the game-winner in the 84th minute of the 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the quarterfinals.
If Layun can play the way he has been playing against Panama on Wednesday, the Mexicans should reach their fourth straight Gold Cup final.
