Sanchez could be doomed to fail in his first year with Jets.

Yousef SalamaMay 9, 2009

Two weeks after drafting Mark Sanchez and giving up Kanyon Coleman, Abram Elam, Brett Ratliff (who I didn't want to see go), and their second round pick. The question the Jets need to ask themselves is; How do we protect Sanchez from failure?

The problem that could arise here and I think this is moreso a problem in New York then anywhere else; is that if Sanchez becomes the opening day starter, who is his mentor? To whom does he seek development? Advice?

Certainly, not Kellen Clemens, he is only in his third year (and none of them as a starter). Granted Rex Ryan turned Joe Flacco into a perennial star in Baltimore, but Ryan's attention this year is going to be focused on turning former 1st round pick Vernon Gholston, into the one-man wrecking crew he was at Ohio State.

Playing in New York with all the expectation that you will be the franchise savior comes with lofty expectations, just ask Eli Manning. Fortunately for Eli he had one of the league's best mentors; Kurt Wartner and look at how that turned out (Super Bowl Ring, 2008)

That is not to say that Manning's success is largely attributable to Warner, but the maturing and professional development skills he obtained did attribute to his overall success. Sanchez is not afforded that same luxury with Clemens.

And this I think will be a problem in the development process of Mark Sanchez. If the Jets are to bring Sanchez along and develop him properly, I think the Jets need to get themselves some protection/insurance for their investment and that is to sign a veteran QB (someone affordable) like a Gus Frerotte, Trent Green or Brad Johnson.

Drafting Sanchez, made the point clear to Kellen Clemens; his future with the franchise is limited. If Clemens does get the job on opening day and plays for a few weeks after it is more of an auction for him to other teams who may be interested in the 2009-10 season.

Despite the friendly gesture made by Sanchez to call Clemens after the draft, it should have been the other way around; this was supposed to be the year Clemens got his opportunity after waiting three years in the wings behind Pennington and Favre.

Had the Jets made that a commitment to him they certainly would used their pick in the draft to get a Wide Receiver to complement Clemens and of course because the team lacks depth at the position; but they didn't, instead the Jets choose Sanchez and decided to begin re-building the team (at least offensive) at the quarterback position.

Now, what the Jets need to do is decide how they will protect their investment properly; The Jets need to bring in a veteran quarterback presence otherwise Sanchez could be doomed to fail in his first year with the Jets.
