Gold Cup 2013 Schedule: Breaking Down Wednesday's Semifinals Clashes
The semifinals of the 2013 Gold Cup kick off on Wednesday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
After a resounding 5-1 victory over El Salvador on Sunday, USA will face Honduras, which eked out a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.
Panama is coming off a resounding win of its own, defeating Cuba on Saturday, 6-1. Panama will face Mexico, which beat Trinidad and Tobago, 1-0.
Here's a look at each semifinals clash on Wednesday.
USA vs. Honduras
When: 7 p.m. ET
OK, so the United States hasn't exactly had the most difficult road to the semifinals. The Americans have defeated world No. 130 Belize, No. 82 Cuba, No. 39 Costa Rica and No. 94 El Salvador so far in the 2013 Gold Cup.
Still, you can't deny that USA is in the zone right now. The Americans lead the tournament with 16 goals in four matches. Chris Wondolowski has five of them. Landon Donovan has also found the back of the net three times, along with compiling six assists. And opponents have scored a combined three goals so far against the side. The Americans are seamlessly working together.
The question is, will Honduras be able to stop the momentum?
Well, the short answer is a flat "no."
Honduras mustered a mere two shots on target against Costa Rica on Sunday, via ESPNFC.com. In fact, if it wasn't for a couple of great saves by goalkeeper Donis Escober, who knows what would have happened.
Honduras—which has scored a total of four goals in the tournament—is going to have a hard time keeping up with the high-powered Americans.
Panama vs. Mexico
When: 10 p.m. ET
Panama has scored eight goals in the 2013 Gold Cup while allowing just two tallies. That includes a 2-1 victory over Mexico to start off the tournament.
In Panama's 2-1 victory, Mexico held possession for 72 percent of the match and got off 12 shots (including four on goal), but the difference was that Panama was able to capitalize on its two shots on goal.
But since that loss, Mexico has gone on to outscore its three opponents by a combined score of 6-1. Plus, you can't expect Panama to give up that much possession and that many shots to Mexico and win a second time.
Mexico should prove its worth in this semifinals battle. For a side that has posted 30 shots on goal during the 2013 Gold Cup (second-most next to USA), it's due for an explosion.
