EPL Transfer News: Most Notable Info from Friday's Managerial Press Conferences
Friday was a surprisingly quiet day on the Premier League transfer window, as the most notable moves of the day involved short-term loans and new agreements from players already on their current club.
In fact, the biggest move of Friday was actually aย non-move. Winger Tom Ince, who was supposed to be heading to Cardiff City this season, informed the club he would not agree to terms with the Premier League side. Ince cited the recent birth of his first child as his reasoning for sticking with Championship side Blackpool, perย The Telegraph'sย John Percy.ย
Outside of Ince's surprising decision, the day was a gigantic yawner on the market.ย
Luckily, Friday also marked press conferences for some of the Premier League's most infamous managers. Chelsea's Jose Mourinho, Arsenal's Arsene Wenger and Manchester United'sย David Moyes each had a morning presser, where they had quite a few interesting things to say about the future of their club.
As speculation continues to bubble surrounding Wayne Rooneyโespecially after he sustained a hamstring injury that will keep him out for a month, per the BBCโthe topic was unsurprisingly broached in more than one of those press conferences.
Luis Suarez's name has also been bandied about in transfer conversations, and the Liverpool striker may wind up sticking around with a fellow Premier League side.ย The Sun'sย Phil Thomas reported that Brendan Rodgers' club will not part with the talentedย Uruguayan for less thanย ยฃ40 million, a topic that was unsurprisingly broached with Wenger.
What was said during these pressers? Here is a complete look at the biggest transfer-related takeaways from Friday.
Mourinho Keen on Wayne Rooney, Moyes Not Having Any of It
The so-called plight of Rooney has been exhaustively covered.
Once considered a lifer at Old Trafford, the emergence of Robin van Persie as United's primary goal-scorer has placed Rooney in a state of flux. During Alex Ferguson's last season as manager, Rooney played all over the pitchโmost notably a stint in the midfieldโwith the club trying to find a workable way to keep he and van Persie together in the starting 11.
It worked out just fine from the club's perspective.
United won the Premier League, after all. But the situation was nowhere near as keen from Rooney's perspective. At age 27, he's still firmly in the prime of his career and has done enough at Old Trafford to warrant a certain level of respectโa level not exactly shown last season.
So it was no surprise when Ferguson claimed Rooney put in a formal transfer request in May. It's been a he-said-he-said situation ever since Ferguson made his claim, but the damage was done. Rooney was officially considered fair game on the open market, and a fusillade of rumors have come about since.
Especially ones linkingย Rooney to Chelsea. Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge came along with the expectation that the Blues would spend and spend hard this summer on top-of-the-line talent, and Rooney was seemingly the most-coveted name.
Nothing has changed since.
Chelsea are still looking to make that one big splash, coming close on a number of opportunities but nothing that made jaws drop. Could Rooney still be in the offing? Mourinho can't quite speak on that matterโPremier League coaches are not allowed to discuss players currently owned by another clubโbut he went out of his way to keep the door somewhat ajar.ย
"He is a player I like very much but I can say no more than that. Being fast and direct, I like that, but he's a Manchester United player," Mourinho said, according to theย Mirror'sย David McDonnellย and Rob Burnett.ย
That's manager speak for "I'd very much like to throw a Brinks truck's worth of money at this player."ย
One problem in this whole scenario: Manchester United aren't budging on their stance that Rooney will be staying with the club.
Speaking on the possibility of Chelsea swooping in and landing Rooney, Moyes was quite frank in saying that under no terms will he be headed elsewhere.ย
"Unless I was speaking Double Dutch last week, we said Wayne Rooney is not for sale," Moyes said, per McDonnell of the Mirror. "Jose has been asked about players as well. It's hard to keep repeating myself but I willโWayne is a Manchester United player and it will remain that way."
Given that people lieย a ton around this time, it's fair to at least keep open a slim possibility. Maybe 0.1 percent. Maybe, if we're feeling frisky, it'll be 0.2 percent. But I tend to believe that Rooney isn't for sale, won't be for sale and the entire situation will blow over by the time he returns.
Wenger Coyly Leaves Suarez Door Wide Open
Where do we start with the list of reasons Suarez could be looking for a new home? The list is lengthy, almost entirely self-created, and makes Suarez the kind of combustibleย transfer that could divide a fanbase.
While no one would ever deny his talent, Suarez is one of the more controversial players in recent Premier League history.
Since arriving at Liverpool, he's been the source of never-ending controversy.
It started in 2011-12, when Suarez was found guilty of racially abusingย Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra and was banned for eight matches. The situation only festered when Suarez brazenly refused to shake Evra's hand during their subsequent match, a move that was largely seen as classlessโboth by the general public and his own ownership group.
And that behavior is somehow just the tip of the iceberg. He was banned for a match for giving Fulham fans the one-finger salute, gaining him a reputation just two seasons into his contract as a bad egg.ย
This past season only confirmed those suspicions. Suarez purposefully bit Chelsea defenderย Branislav Ivanovic, an act that got him an unprecedented 10-match ban from the Football Association. The entire situation was strange, with Suarez losing his temper in one of the most childish ways possible.
You would think, then, that Suarez would have been contriteโmerely happy to be a part of his club.ย
Nope.ย Suarez requested a transfer in May, citing the English media's intrusion on his life.
Allow me to posit a theory, Mr. Suarez. Perhaps if you didn't go around being racially discriminatory and cannibalisticย on the pitch, then maybe few would care about what you're getting at the market. Controversy only sparks more attention.
But alas, when a player is as talented as Suarez, sometimes you can overlook those sorts of things. The Uruguayan forward is just 26, in the prime of his career and is a superstar at the Premier League level. He finished behind only van Persie among goal-scorers last season and has showed no signs of slowing down.
So, yeah. Teams are interested. Most notably, Arsenal have been linked to Suarez throughout the process. Unfortunately, the secretiveness of the transfer process leaves Wenger unable to comment, so he did the next best thingโgave the noted coy "no comment," per John Cross ofย theย Mirror.
"Suarez? As you know the transfer period demands secrets and confidentiality, so I can't answer the question," Wenger said.
This situation isn't dying anytime soon. The question remains, though, about whether Arsenal are willing to pay the massive transfer fee in order to make the deal happen.ย
