NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz on Biggest Names on the Block
Outside of a few blockbusters early in the offseason, trades haven’t been dominating the NBA headlines this summer.
However, it seems like quite a few players have been on the block, and some are even asking to get put on it.
With so much talent being dangled, it would be surprising if there weren’t a few bites in the coming weeks.
Let's take a look at the latest trade talk sweeping the Association in Saturday’s rumor roundup.
Bobcats Taking Time with Henderson
The Charlotte Bobcats are reportedly seeking out sign-and-trade suitors for restricted free agent Gerald Henderson.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the club reached an impasse with the shooting guard when it was reluctant to dole out a deal worth $7.5 million to $8.5 million annually.
Henderson is owed a qualifying offer just over $4 million for the upcoming season, and that is a large reason why ownership isn’t rushing to jettison the No. 12 overall pick in 2009.
Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer noted that the situation is “fluid,” and there is no reason for the ‘Cats to commit a panic move.
Henderson had a great second half to his 2012-13 season and is one of the more intriguing talents on the trading block. It will be interesting if a team emerges as a potential sign-and-trade destination before he hits the open market next summer.
Omer Asked Out
When Dwight Howard defected from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Houston Rockets, Omer Asik was one of the few people in Southeast Texas who wasn’t happy.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the big man—who had one of the better seasons for a pivot in the league last year—reportedly requested a trade and threatened to leave via free agency.
Unfortunately, with two years and $20 million left on his contract, Asik has little leverage in his demands, and his threats ring hollow.
The 27-year-old averaged 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds in 2012-13 but wants no part of playing with D12. Given that they both man the same position, it’s hard to see how coach Kevin McHale could maximize their talents and minutes.
Daryl Morey will likely figure something out soon, as the genius general manager has yet to let down fans in Houston.
Jimmer Still Available
Jimmer Fredette has not had a successful start to his young NBA career, but it’s not too late to escape the Sacramento Kings and fix that.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Fredette has been shopped to at least the Cleveland Cavaliers within the past week.
With a new ownership and front office team in Sactown, who knows how many calls could be made trying to dump the former BYU star’s “virtually” expiring $2.4 million contract.
Through two seasons, Fredette has failed to live up to expectations as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 draft.
He is averaging 7.4 points, 1.5 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game, losing ground in all significant categories except shooting percentage in his sophomore campaign.
A fresh start would do both the Kings and Fredette some good, so hopefully the two parties can work something out by the end of the summer.
