Women's Euro 2013: Highlighting Top Stars Who Will Have Biggest Impact

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2018

Football never stops.

Just as fans are recovering from the Under-21 European Championship and Confederations Cup, the Women's European Championship is getting ready to kick off.

Although women's football will always be a distant second to the men's game, that doesn't mean fans won't be offered some high-quality football and big-name stars at the 2013 Women's Euro.

Here are four of the top stars to watch.

Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, Germany

Birgit Prinz is one of the biggest names in the history of the women's German national team. She was a very decorated player and scored a boatload of goals.

In her stead, Germany has Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, so the team should get along just fine. She won the 2012 German Female Footballer of the Year with SC 07 Bad Neuenahr.

Germany has been hit with a spate of injuries over recent weeks, so it will be up to Okoyino da Mbabi to help lead the country to its second Euro title in a row. She's an extremely skilled forward, capable of scoring or getting her teammates involved.

Caroline Seger, Sweden

Caroline Seger scored a goal in Sweden's 4-1 friendly win over England a little less than a week ago. It was a great way to enter the tournament, as Seger looks to have Sweden primed for a deep run in the tournament.

Seger doesn't score often, so the goal against England was a bit of a rare occurrence. Instead, she is at her best from deeper in the midfield, where she can control the attack and look to get her teammates involved.

Lotta Schelin wouldn't be anywhere near as effective if she didn't have a playmaker like Seger playing behind her and setting her up to score.

Marie-Laure Delie, France

Marie-Laure Delie is one of the best forwards in Europe. She's done extremely well for Montpellier and has parlayed that into a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

There are few goalscorers as reliable as Delie. When she gets the ball in the 18-yard box, opposing teams have to become worried and account for her presence.

What's scary is that she's only 25 years old and is only going to get better. Although she still has quite a ways to go, Delie ranks second on France in goalscoring. She'll likely add a few more to that tally at Euro 2013.

Casey Stoney, England

It can't all be about the attacking players. You need defenders to step up, and luckily for England, it has a very good defender in Casey Stoney.

As the captain of England, it's up to Stoney to make sure her teammates are composed on the pitch and don't let the match get away from them.

Unlike the men's national team, England's women's team is looking to at least repeat the result of Euro 2009, when it lost to Germany in the final. It was the team's biggest success in quite a while.

With all of the talented forwards and midfielders, Stoney is going to need to play her best in order to keep England among the elite of the tournament. The Three Lionesses have a lot of talent, but they could have problems facing the likes of Germany and France.
