USA vs. Belize: Players Who Stole the Show in Gold Cup Match
The United States rolled over Belize in the 2013 Gold Cup on Tuesday, 6-1.
It was such a mismatch that one American player scored a hat-trick...in the first half alone. USA also held the ball for 73 percent of the match, while posting 26 shots (14 on goal), according to ESPNFC.
It was a monumental effort by an American side that continues to roll and a brutal loss for Belize, which was appearing in its first ever Gold Cup match.
Here's a look at the players who stole the show on Tuesday in Portland.
Chris Wondolowski
You cannot talk about players who stole the show without talking about Chris Wondolowski.
The 29-year-old from California exploded on Tuesday, scoring three goals before halftime, one off a rebound and two headers off open crosses.
Wondolowski, who plays for the San Jose Earthquake in the MLS, made the most out of his first opportunity with the U.S. national team this year. Headed into the match, he had scored five goals in 17 matches for the Earthquakes, but he scored more than half of that on Tuesday night.
It's safe to say Wondolowski is making a name for himself on the pitch.
He may want to change his jersey, though.
Landon Donovan
In just his second match for the U.S. national team this year, Landon Donovan looked like the Landon Donovan we are accustomed to seeing.
The 31-year-old registered two assists and a goal off a penalty, including his 50th assist in national-team play (setting an American record in the process).
His first assist set up Stuart Holden, who must have been grateful while attempting to get back into playing shape. His second assist found Michael Orozco following a set piece.
Donovan has been a standout player for USA throughout the years, even during some rough times for the side. He continued to be a standout player for the Americans on Tuesday, with perhaps bigger feats in mind moving forward.
He's part of a USA team that seems to be coming into its own on the pitch.
Stuart Holden
Stuart Holden has had a brutal last three years since breaking his leg in a friendly against the Netherlands in March 2010.
After breaking his leg, Holden found himself mostly on the bench for the 2010 World Cup. Then, he fractured his knee joint in March 2011 off a tackle. He had to have microfracture surgery and wasn't able to get back on the pitch until January of this year.
But, boy, what a moment it must have been for Holden to score for the U.S. national team on Tuesday off of Donovan's touch!
U.S. Soccer tweeted:
If Holden can continue to be an impact player for USA after such a brutal spell, it would truly be one of the great stories in world football.
In fact, you could say it already is.
