European Transfer Window Power Rankings

Nick AkermanJun 3, 2018

The summer transfer window always heats up in July. Following on from last week's rankings, plenty of business is currently being conducted throughout Europe.

Taking into account every confirmed deal, money spent and received isn't the only criteria judged. The value of each player to both their departing and new team should also be taken into consideration. This means just because Neymar may be the highest quality player exchanged in the window, Barcelona aren't confirmed to take the number one spot.

Which teams are getting value for money? Who has sold one of their best players? Read on to find out.

20. Arsenal

1 of 20

Movement: New entry

Transfers In: Yaya Sanogo (Auxerre, free).

Transfers Out: Andrey Arshavin (released), Samir Bihmoutine (released), Reice Charles-Cook (released), Denilson (released), Craig Eastmond (released), Sead Hajrovic (released), Conor Henderson (released), Jernade Meade (released), Nigel Oldfield Spence-Neita (released), Joshua Rees (released), Philip Roberts (released), James Shea (released), Sebastien Squillaci (released), Sanchez Watt (released).

Arsene Wenger's first dip into the summer transfer market sees a young, talented Frenchman join the Gunners. Haven't we ever heard that before?

Yaya Sanogo scored 11 goals in 24 appearances for Auxerre and arrives as a free agent after his Ligue 2 contract expired, as reported by BBC Sport. The starlet is currently performing well at the U-20 World Cup and could prove to be a shrewd bit of business for Wenger.

Arsenal fans shouldn't expect an immediate impact but will be pleased to see the team finally confirming a deal.

19. Benfica

2 of 20

Movement: Down seven

Transfers In: Lazar Markovic (Partizan Belgrade, undisclosed), Filip Duricic (Heerenveen, £5 million), Miralem Sulejmani (Ajax, free), Jorge Rojas (Club Cerro Porteno, £1 million), Uros Matic (Kosice, free).

Transfers Out: Pablo Aimar (released), Luciano Teixeira (Metz, free).

No changes at Benfica week see the club slip down the rankings. Smart deals for Lazar Markovic, Filip Duricic and Miralem Sulejmani should help the Portuguese side compete for next season's Liga Sagres title, but Jorge Jesus will need more quality if the famous team is to topple Porto.

18. Barcelona

3 of 20

Movement: Down five

Transfers In: Neymar (Santos, £48.6 million).

Transfers Out: Eric Abidal (released), Marc Muniesa (Stoke City, free).

Just one piece of business across the last week has seen Marc Muniesa leave the Camp Nou on a free transfer. Mark Hughes—who played for the Catalan club between 1986-88—used his old contacts to seal the deal, according to The Guardian.

Barcelona have let a versatile 21-year-old leave without a whimper. Other quality pieces of business across Europe have also seen the club drop this week.

17. Norwich City

4 of 20

Movement: Down six

Transfers In: Ricky van Wolfswinkel (Sporting Lisbon, £8.5 million), Javier Garrido (Lazio, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Chris Martin (Derby County, free), Marc Tierney (Bolton Wanderers, free), Simeon Jackson (released), Lee Camp (released), Elliott Ward (released), Korey Smith (released), Tom Adeyemi (released).

According to BBC Sport, Norwich are majorly interested in signing Nathan Redmond from Birmingham City. The flashy winger—who emerged as one of England U-21's best performers during a terrible European U-21 Championship campaign—could make quite an impact at Carrow Road.

Until then, the club's lack of activity sees them drop six places.

16. Bayer Leverkusen

5 of 20

Movement: No change

Transfers In: Son Heung-Min (Hamburg, £8.5 million), Andres Palop (Sevilla, free), Robbie Kruse (Fortuna Dusseldorf, £1.94 million), Giulio Donati (Inter Milan, undisclosed), Emir Spahic (Sevilla, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Daniel Schwaab (VfB Stuttgart, free), Junior Fernandes (Dinamo Zagreb, season-long loan), Hajime Hosogai (Hertha Berlin, undisclosed), Daniel Carvajal (Real Madrid, £5.5 million), Michal Kadlec (Fenerbahce, undisclosed), Michael Rensing (Fortuna Dusseldorf, free), Christoph Kramer (Borussia Monchengladbach, season-long loan), Andre Schurrle (Chelsea, £18.7 million).

Sami Hyypia continues to restrengthen his squad after losing many key names already this summer. As confirmed by Sky Sports, Bosnia Herzegovina captain Emir Spahic is the sole acquisition across the past week and should help plug the German team's defence next season.

15. Chelsea

6 of 20

Movement: Down six

Transfers In: Andre Schurrle (Bayer Leverkusen, £18.7 million).

Transfers Out: Marko Marin (Sevilla, loan), Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid, season-long loan), Florent Malouda (released), Paulo Ferreira (retired), Ross Turnbull (released), Yossi Benayoun (released), Henrique Hilario (released).

No major comings or goings at Stamford Bridge, combined with quality deals elsewhere, sees Chelsea drop significantly this week.

14. Sunderland

7 of 20

Movement: Down four

Transfers In: Modibo Diakite (Lazio, free), Cabral (FC Basel, free), Duncan Watmore (Altrincham, undisclosed), Valentin Roberge (Maritimo, free), Vito Mannone (Arsenal, £2 million).

Transfers Out: Titus Bramble (released), Matt Kilgallon (released), Ryan Noble (released), Simon Mignolet (Liverpool, £9 million).

Paolo Di Canio has already confirmed a number of decent signings this summer, but Vito Mannone's arrival from Arsenal may have fans scratching their heads. As reported by The Daily Mail, the 25-year-old Italian joins on a two-year deal.

Is he good enough to be the Black Cats' resident stopper?

13. Swansea City

8 of 20

Movement: New entry

Transfers In: Alejandro Pozuelo (Real Betis, £440,000), Jonathan De Guzman (Villarreal, loan), Gregor Zabret (NK Domzale, undisclosed), Jordi Amat (Espanyol, £2.5 million), Jose Canas (Real Betis, free), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool, £5 million).

Transfers Out: Mark Gower (Charlton Athletic, free), Kyle Bartley (Birmingham City, loan), David Cornell (St. Mirren, loan), Itay Shechter (Kaiserslautern, undisclosed).

Michael Laudrup is fascinating to watch in the transfer market. Last summer's £2 million acquisition of Michu highlights how the Danish manager is able to sniff out a bargain. He has already signed a number of quality players without letting much go.

Jonathan De Guzman's second loan spell was confirmed by BBC Sport and will make plenty of Swansea fans pleased. Having already nicked Jose Canas from Real Betis during the window, Laudrup also returned to seal a cheap deal for young attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo, as reported by The Daily Express.

Just sneaking into this week's rankings is confirmation from The Guardian that Swansea have signed Jonjo Shelvey in a £5 million deal from Liverpool.

12. Stuttgart

9 of 20

Movement: Down five

Transfers In: Mohammed Abdellaoue (Hannover 96, undisclosed), Moritz Leitner (Borussia Dortmund, two-season loan), Gotoku Sakai (Albirex Niigata, £1 million), Thorsten Kirschbaum (Energie Cottbus, free), Daniel Schwaab (Bayer Leverkusen, free), Sercan Sararer (Greuther Furth, free), Konstantin Rausch (Hannover, free), Marco Rojas (Melbourne Victory, free).

Transfers Out: Raphael Holzhauser (Augsburg, loan), Shinji Okazaki (Mainz, undisclosed), Marc Ziegler (retired), Mamadou Bah (released).

Stuttgart continue to turn over its staff pretty heavily right now. As revealed on the official Bundesliga site, Raphael Holzhauser has moved to Augsburg on loan. Sky Sports also confirmed Shinji Okazaki's time at the Mercedes-Benz Arena is over on a permanent basis.

11. Fiorentina

10 of 20

Movement: Re-entry

Transfers In: Joaquin (Málaga, undisclosed), Marcos Alonso (Bolton Wanderers, free), Oleksandr Yakovenko (Anderlecht, free), Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (Udinese, loan).

Transfers Out: None.

Having played on loan at Fiorentina last season, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado is set to represent the Serie A side on another season-long deal from Udinese, as reported by Football Italia. Reports on Goal believe the ambitious squad is also on the brink of landing Mario Gomez from Bayern Munich, a signing that would further thrust the team up these rankings.

10. Fulham

11 of 20

Movement: Down four

Transfers In: Fernando Amorebieta (Athletic Bilbao, free), Derek Boateng (Dnipro, free), Sascha Riether (Cologne, undisclosed), Maarten Stekelenburg (AS Roma, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Simon Davies (released), Giorgos Karagounis (released), Chris Baird (released), Mahamadou Diarra (released), Mladen Petric (released).

No changes at Craven Cottage this week. Can Martin Jol continue his run of intelligent signings? Only time will tell.

9. Aston Villa

12 of 20

Movement: Down five

Transfers In: Aleksandar Tonev (Lech Poznan, undisclosed), Jores Okore (FC Nordsjaelland, undisclosed), Leandro Bacuna (FC Groningen, undisclosed), Antonio Luna (Sevilla, £1.5 million), Nicklas Helenius (Aalborg, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Stiliyan Petrov (retired, now in coaching staff role), Richard Dunne (released), Jean Makoun (Rennes, undisclosed), Eric Lichaj (released), Andy Marshall (released).

Paul Lambert has engaged in some fantastic transfer opportunities this summer, but a lack of activity across the past week sees Aston Villa slip slightly down the list.

8. Porto

13 of 20

Movement: Down five

Transfers In: Hector Herrera (Pachuca, £7.5 million), Diego Reyes (Club America, £6 million), Lica (Estoril, undisclosed), Carlos Eduardo (Estoril, £750,000), Josue (Pacos de Ferreira, undisclosed), Tiago Rodrigues (Vitoria de Guimaraes, undisclosed), Ricardo Pereira (Vitoria de Guimaraes, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Joao Moutinho (AS Monaco, £21.5 million), James Rodriguez (AS Monaco, £38.5 million).

Porto are sure to be considering plenty of talent across the summer, but the Portuguese champions need to take time before splashing cash. James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho are huge players to replace, so it's no surprise Paulo Fonseca has been quiet across the past week.

7. Liverpool

14 of 20

Movement: Down five

Transfers In: Kolo Toure (Manchester City, free), Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo, £7 million), Luis Alberto (Sevilla, undisclosed), Simon Mignolet (Sunderland, £9 million).

Transfers Out: Jonjo Shelvey (Swansea City, £5 million), Tyrell Belford (released), Jamie Carragher (retired), James Stephens (released), Daniel Wilson (released), Peter Gulacsi (Red Bull Salzburg, free).

With the sale of Shelvey confirmed, Liverpool fans may be wondering why the club ever put faith in the former Charlton Athletic midfielder. Even so, ESPN reveals Brendan Rodgers is looking at bringing in two more signings, but little activity sees the Premier League side drop.

6. Monaco

15 of 20

Movement: Down one

Transfers In: Radamel Falcao (Atletico Madrid, £50 million), Joao Moutinho (Porto, £21.5 million), James Rodriguez (Porto, £38.5 million), Ricardo Carvalho (Real Madrid, free), Nicolas Isimat-Mirin (Valenciennes, undisclosed), Anthony Martial (Lyon, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: None.

MONACO HAVE SIGNED EVERYONE. I'm kidding. This week, youth potential has been invested in. Nicolas Isimat-Mirin completed a move from Valenciennes according to Goal, while Lyon were unwillingly forced into selling young striker Anthony Martial to their Ligue 1 counterparts, as confirmed by Sky Sports.

5. Stoke City

16 of 20

Movement: New entry

Transfers In: Marc Muniesa (Barcelona, free), Erik Pieters (PSV Eindhoven, £3 million).

Transfers Out: Carlo Nash (released), Dean Whitehead (released), Mamady Sidibe (released), Rory Delap (released), Matthew Upson (released), Matthew Lund (released), Michael Owen (retired).

What on earth? Mark Hughes appears to be actively changing the Stoke City way. Instead of signing two lumbering oaths, the new manager has opted for two defenders who signal the beginning of a bright future for the Britannia crowd.

BBC Sport confirmed the £3 million arrival of 24-year-old left-back Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven, while The Daily Mail revealed Marc Muniesa signed a four-year contract from Barcelona. Two genuine coups for Hughes, who appears to be settling into his new task right from the off.

4. Shakhtar Donetsk

17 of 20

Movement: New entry

Transfers In: Fred (Internacional, £13 million), Fernando (Gremio, £9.6 million), Wellington Nem (Fluminense, £8 million), Oleksandr Volovyk (Metalurg Donetsk, undisclosed).

Transfers Out: Fernandinho (Manchester City, £34 million), Razvan Rat (West Ham United, free), Oleksiy Gai (Chornomorets Odessa, free).

The sale of Fernandinho opened up plenty of funds for Shakhtar Donetsk. Goal revealed the Ukrainian side recently completed the signing of Fred from Internacional, continuing the club's insistence on harnessing Brazilian talent.

Fred joins Fernando and Wellington Nem as the European side's new South American contingency, suggesting the Donbass Arena could witness even more flair next year.

3. Real Madrid

18 of 20

Movement: Re-entry

Transfers In: Isco (Malaga, £23 million), Dani Carvajal (Bayer Leverkusen, £5.5 million), Carlos Casemiro (Sao Paulo, £5.1 million).

Transfers Out: Ricardo Carvalho (AS Monaco, free).

It appears to be quality all the way for Real Madrid. The Spanish giants finally captured Isco last week, as reported by BBC Sport. Alongside this, Jese Rodriguez is likely to receive a call-up from Real Madrid Castilla, while the likes of Alvaro Morata and Nacho could play a bigger part in the upcoming season.

Carlo Ancelotti has plenty of exciting youth to enjoy already.

2. Dynamo Kiev

19 of 20

Movement: New entry

Transfers In: Younes Belhanda (Montpellier, undisclosed), Dieumerci Mbokani (Anderlecht, undisclosed), Jeremain Lens (PSV Eindhoven, £8 million).

Transfers Out: Raffael (Borussia Monchengladbach, £4.5 million), Taras Mykhalyk (Lokomotiv Moscow, undisclosed).

Younes Belhanda has caught the interest of many clubs across the past few years, but Dynamo Kiev managed to snatch him from Ligue 1. BBC Sport confirmed his move, even though the Morocco international had to deny he considered backing out of the move (as reported by Sky Sports).

1. Juventus

20 of 20

Movement: No change

Transfers In: Carlos Tevez (Manchester City, £10 million), Federico Peluso (Atalanta), Fernando Llorente (Athletico Bilbao, free), Kwadwo Asamoah (Udinese, undisclosed)

Transfers Out: Nicolas Anelka (released), Vincenzo Iaquinta (released), Raffael Alcibiade (Budapest Honved, free), Marco Constantino (Modena, undisclosed).

Juventus fans have plenty of thrilling times ahead. Not only has Antonio Conte secured deals for Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Federico Peluso, the Turin club faces a battle with Napoli for defender Angelo Ogbonna (according to Football Italia).

Even so, the Italian side's transfer business represents the best value for money so far.
