U-20 World Cup 2013 Results: Scores and Highlights from Day 10

Rob GoldbergJul 2, 2013

Half of the quarterfinals are now set at the U-20 World Cup after the first day of knockout-stage action.

After the group stage cut the number of teams in the competition from 24 to 16, Day 10 featured the first part of the win-or-go-home format. This is where the young players are truly tested not only physically but also mentally.

In the end, four more teams were sent home, leaving only 12 squads remaining in the quest for one of the top prizes in international football.

Here is a complete look at all of the results from Tuesday's matches.

Uzbekistan 3, Greece 1

One of the biggest surprises in the entire tournament came in the first match of the Round of 16.

As noted by the official FIFA Twitter account, this was not the prettiest game:

Abbosbek Makhstaliev got Uzbekistan on the board with a clean goal in the 26th minute. However, that was the only score all day during live action.

After a Dimitrios Diamantakos foul, Greece sent Kostas Stafylidis to the spot where he came through with the equalizing goal. However, the second half was where things got even uglier.

Dimitrios Kourmpelis was booked for a red card in the 59th minute, resulting in a penalty shot for Uzbekistan. It was successfully converted by Igor Sergeev to give his side a 2-1 lead.

Sardor Rakhmanov then doubled the lead to 3-1 on yet another penalty shot in the 82nd minute. This time, it was Konstantinos Triantafyllopoulos who committed the foul deep into his own zone.

Uzbekistan defender Boburbek Yuldashov got himself sent off as well for his second yellow card in the 85th minute, but there was not enough time for Greece to come back.

Although the eventual winners only managed to finish third in Group F, they are now headed to the quarterfinals where they will face France.

Spain 2, Mexico 1

Based on the results in the group stage, you would expect this match to be a blowout.

Spain dominated arguably the toughest selection of teams in the tournament and outscored opponents 7-2 while winning all three matches. Meanwhile, Mexico barely escaped the previous round based on goal differential after defeating Mali 4-1.

That win represented the first points for Mexico in the tournament.

However, the North American team has a lot more talent than it displayed to this point, and it is not surprising that this became one of the most competitive matches in the competition.

Mexico started things off with an outstanding goal in the opening minute. Jose Abella Fanjul hit a long cross to the far post, and Arturo González González volleyed it in for the goal.

For much of the match, Spain failed to create anything offensively, and it appeared as though the talented team was going home early. However, Derik Osede got the equalizer in the 73rd minute to keep the squad alive.

Jese Rodríguez Ruíz then put his side ahead for good with a goal in the 90th minute, much to the dismay of the Mexican team. Analyst Ives Galarcep blames the underdogs for not keeping the pressure on:

Considering Spain's ability to get goals when needed, however, it is hard to imagine the squad losing.

France 4, Turkey 1

Despite a strong effort by the host country in the group stage, Turkey's run for a title was cut short by the talented squad from France.

The visiting team controlled the pace for most of the match and got out to an early lead, thanks to first-half goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck.

After intermission, the onslaught continued with scores by Jordan Veretout and new Arsenal man Yaya Sanogo. Things could have been even worse if Florian Thauvin had made his penalty shot in the 64th minute.

While Turkey did finally avoid the shutout thanks to a Sinan Bakis score in the 76th minute, it was way too little, way too late for the home squad.

France has looked underwhelming at times during this tournament with only four points in three matches in the group stage. However, the talent is undeniable, and it was on full display in this match.

The squad will move on to face Uzbekistan in the next round. If France plays like it did Tuesday, it can make a deep run in this tournament.

Uruguay 2, Nigeria 1

While this was a closely contested match throughout, two mistakes by Nigeria's defense cost the squad the match.

The first notable moment happened shortly before halftime with the match still scoreless. An aggressive play by Diego Laxalt Suárez drew a tough foul by Nigerian defender Abdullahi Shehu, which resulted in a red card and his removal from the match.

Although Uruguay was a man-up for most of the contest, however, it took until the 65th minute to finally get onto the scoreboard when Nicolas Lopez put the team up 1-0.

However, Nigeria came right back with a goal by Olarenwaju Kayode only three minutes later to once again tie the match.

This score stood until another major mistake by the African squad's defense. Onyinye W. Ndidi committed a foul in the box, which led to Lopez scoring from the spot for his second goal of the match.

Uruguay has looked good at times in this championship, but the group is incredibly inconsistent. It will need to be at its best in the next match, however, as it looks to pull off an upset against Spain.
