Brett Favre Update

William Del PilarMay 5, 2009

So we’re starting to hear rumblings regarding the league’s most overrated modern day quarterback. Better known as John Madden’s son.  OK, not quite son, so let’s go with lover? Too much? OK, how about “World’s No. 1 Fan!” I like that one. As you can clearly see, I have no respect for Brett Favre in how many view him. I feel his value and greatness is more perception than reality when you compare what he does come playoff time to what the all-time greats have done.

You see, I actually have standards before I toss in the “great” label on players, and Favre, when push comes to shove, can’t hold the jockstraps of most great quarterbacks!

However, I’m not here to blast on Favre and how the media helped create America’s most overrated football player. I just love to tell individuals the truth about how bad a playoff quarterback he is. However, that’s not this blog!

I’m here to provide an update and my thoughts on him; love him or hate him, it’s great to watch him play! For that I’ll give him 100 percent credit. I enjoyed watching him play, specifically lose, and as any businessperson will tell you, he brought in the television ratings. That’s always good for the game!

The question is if he’s really retired (dates are from date of articles)? Let’s take a quick look at a timeline and, sadly, this article was complete before the May 5, report:

  • February: Favre asks for his release.
  • February: Vikings owner Zygi Wilf states he has no interest in Favre.
  • April 28: Released! Favre gets his release from the New York Jets
  • April 29: Will remain retired! Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, through a report by Chris Mortensen, stated Favre does not have any desire to come back.
  • April 30: Mystery Flight! Rich Cimini reports a private jet from Minneapolis flew to Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport in the morning and left back to Minneapolis in the afternoon. The key here is that Hattiesburg, Miss. is where Favre lives. This is speculation, but it’s what keeps blogs, articles, and anything you’re reading about Favre right now interesting!
  • May 01: Hiring a personal Trainer! In a report in the Pioneer Press—that is a great read—it breaks down potential reasons for why some of this has happened. However, I found the following comments about Favre hiring a trainer as much more relevant than anything else I could think of. Favre’s dramatic turn around in 2007 was because of his commitment during the offseason and a strong training regimen. (For the record, current reports say Favre has not hired a personal trainer.)
  • May 02: Talking about it! Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress states, or admits, the team will eventually talk about bringing Brett Favre in. It’s a solid report as it also talks smartly from a business sense. I do believe Favre would help sellout any remaining games, and it’s a smart business move to talk about him.
  • May 02: No comment! Vikings owner Zygi Wilf stated, “I have no comment,” which is a far cry from what he was saying in February: The team would have no interest in Favre regardless if he was available or not!
  • May 05: Favre to Return? ESPN reports that Favre will meet with head coach Brad Childress on a possible return to the NFL!

Maybe I’m a bit slow.  No, not even close! Maybe I’m just reading into this too much. No, that’s not it, either! Maybe I’m right on the money? Possibly, because if push comes to shove, I will say that Brett Favre will indeed be wearing purple and gold this season.

I know my childhood friend Jay Wood, a hardcore Vikings fan, whom I have not seen, spoken to or heard from since 1984, would finally believe his team is Super Bowl bound! Here’s a potential toast to Jay and all Vikings fans, because this could be a season to remember!

As usual, let me know your thoughts, and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!
