Red Devils Do It Again! United Are Going to the Champions League Final

Andrew JordanMay 6, 2009

On Tuesday, Manchester United went to the Emirates Stadium in North London to take on English rival Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between the two.

Going into the match, United was up 1-0 in aggregate after winning 1-0 on a John O' Shea goal at Old Trafford last Wednesday, and knew that they only needed one away goal to pretty much salt away this game, as Arsenal would need three goals in order to win on aggregate.

However, this didn't matter as Manchester United got three goals in the game in a 3-1 thrashing at the Emirates and advanced to the final in Rome. Here is a recap of the game

First Half

Early on, it seemed that Arsenal would try to score early, but it turned out that Man Utd would be the first team to score.

In the eighth minute, Cristiano Ronaldo broke down the left side charging toward the goal and made a cross to the middle, where Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs lost his footing when getting to the ball, which allowed Park Ji-Sung to take his shot, which deflected off of Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia and went into the back of the net to give United a 1-0 lead.

Then, three minutes later, United had another chance to score. They won a free kick that was 41 yards away from the goal, and Ronaldo lined up for the free kick.

He then unleashed a missile towards the goal, and went past Almunia at the near post, and gave United a 2-0 lead, and had seemed that they already clinched their spot in the final in Rome. This further stunned the crowd at the Emirates, as they went silent as they knew their team was done.

For the rest of the first half, United continued to get shots on goal, but Almunia either barely denied the shots from going in, or the shots barely missed the target.

Arsenal also was starting to make their move offensively, as they took several shots, but none of them were hard shots to stop for Edwin Van de Sar, and as the game went into the half, United led 2-0.

Second Half

In the second half, Ronaldo and the rest of the United attack continued their assault on Almunia, as he was forced into making several more unbelievable saves. But in the 61st minute, Ronaldo finished on a Rooney cross, which made the score 3-0.

Ferguson then told his troops to tone down their celebrations, and that was pretty much all of the mercy Man Utd gave to the hosts.

However, Arsenal got a goal on a penalty shot on a very controversial play involving Cesc Fábregas and Darren Fletcher, in which Fletcher cleared the ball away from Fábregas, but referee Roberto Rosetti didn't see it that way, as he immediately gave Fletcher a red card, even though he didn't have a clear view of the play.

This will cause Fletcher to miss the final with a suspension for the final in Rome.

Robin Van Persie then put the penalty into the back of the net and made it a 3-1 game, but it came to little constellation to Arsenal, as they lost by that score several minutes later, and Manchester United have now advanced to their second straight Champions League final, where they will play the winner of Chelsea vs. Barcelona on May 27 in Rome.

United are now the first team to advance to two straight Champions League finals since Juventus in 1997 and 1998, and will be looking to become the first team to win consecutive Champions League finals since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

So far in this competition, they have looked like they are the best team in the world, and are now going to have another chance to prove that during the final later on this month.
