Brett Farvre: If Favre Returns—Again—He Will Lose More Respect Than Ever

Josh JusticeMay 5, 2009

When I saw the Favre interview on ESPN last year, where he stated that he would never step on an NFL field again, a part of me wanted to believe him. I really felt like Favre had embarrassed himself enough with last season to realize that it was time to hang his cleats up.

Apparently I was wrong. Here we are in the middle of the offseason and Favre wants to play for the Vikings. I’m not shocked and I’m not mad, I’m disappointed. Favre has taken an outstanding career and marred it with all of this indecision.

What’s Brett’s inspiration for a return this year? He wants revenge against the Packers. Brett has gone from a football hero to an immature child.

I remember when Favre retirement talks first started. It took him nearly a full offseason to make his decision to return. This put the Packers in a huge bind, they had no idea how to handle their draft or handle their offseason targets.

Luckily for them, Favre decided to return. He had a great year that year, in fact you could call it a career year. He set the all time touchdown record, set a record for wins, and made the playoffs. After the 2007 season, on March 4, 2008 Favre officially announced his retirement.

After four months, Favre contacted the Packers about returning. This after the Packers had committed to Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback.

Favre officially spoke out about his desire to play football again and claimed the Packers pressured him into making a decision before the NFL draft. Most people took Favre's side after this statement—I wasn’t one of those people.

I agreed completely with the Packers. As an organization they couldn’t allow a player to put them in a bind two years in a row.

After a huge mess that eventually had to get the NFL commissioner involved, Favre was traded to the Jets. I was glad to see Favre back on the field with another team. He is one of the league's greatest of all time, and he had just had a great season, maybe he could reproduce that form with the Jets?

Unfortunately it didn’t happen that way. Favre didn’t produce anywhere near to the results of his 2007 season and earned nothing more than the criticism of his teammates.

On February 11, 2009 Favre informed the Jets that he would retire after 18 seasons in the NFL.

Here we are once again, in the same boat we started in during 2008.

So why would I lose respect for Favre if he returns to play again? I would be upset for the simple reason that he is returning for the wrong reason.

To want get revenge on a franchise that you helped build and stuck with you through the good and the bad, is showing that Brett Favre is nothing but a selfish player.

So what if Favre plays for the Vikings? So what if he beats the Packers, what is he proving? He is going to put the Vikings in a tough position knowing that they will not have a quarterback next year, just so he can play two games.

That’s if he wins the games. If he loses them what does he do? Keep playing until he beats them? I can see it now, Favre heading to the line with his walker.

Brett—you want to risk the quality of your career for two games. Yes, I would lose respect for one of the game's greats.

I ask everyone that reads this article; do you think it is worth Brett coming back for another season just to get a shot at the Packers? Will you lose respect for a player who has announced retirement twice?
