NBA Draft Rumors: Breaking Down Latest Buzz Heading into Summer Event
The 2013 NBA draft is just two days away, but there's a whole lot that can happen between now and draft night.
While some teams have their sights set on promising rookies, others are looking to dump salaries or bring in veteran talent in order to make a run at the title in 2013-14.
Here we'll break down the latest rumors and buzz heading into this summer's draft.
Wizards Content to Hold onto No. 3 Pick?
It would appear that the Washington Wizards are content to hang onto the No. 3 overall pick in Thursday's draft.
According to multiple league sources via The Washington Post's Michael Lee on Monday, the Wizards have no intention of shipping the third pick in the draft to Chicago in exchange for veteran forward Luol Deng.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein had reported that both clubs had talks about potentially making the swap, which would include Emeka Okafor, but all indications from Lee's sources are that Washington will bring in a rookie with the selection this summer.
Here's the summary from Lee:
"The Wizards have had discussions with several teams but the team still intends to make a selection Thursday, according to another league source.
"
Washington drafted Bradley Beal No. 3 overall in 2012, and it seems the franchise will draft from that same spot again in 2013.
Jimmer Fredette Era in Sactown Coming to a Close?
The Sacramento Kings will draft No. 7 overall in the first round on Thursday night, but according to ESPN.com's Chad Ford and Marc Stein, the team is hoping to pick up another first-round pick before the draft.
Here's the skinny from the ESPN.com duo:
"The Sacramento Kings are looking to acquire a second first-round pick and are using guard Jimmer Fredette as bait. Sources say the Kings have reached out to a number of teams in the mid-to-late first round in an attempt to secure another pick. Both the Indiana Pacers and Utah Jazz are potential destinations for Jimmer.
"
Sacramento drafted Fredette 10th overall in the 2011 NBA draft, but the guard has started just seven games for the Kings since then. He's averaging just 7.4 points per game for his NBA career, and has struggled with his consistency.
Despite hitting over 38 percent of his three-pointers since being drafted, Fredette is just a 40-percent shooter from the floor.
As a former BYU superstar, Fredette would become a fan favorite immediately in Utah, one of the potential landing spots highlighted by Ford and Stein.
Portland Trail Blazers Active in Pre-Draft Talks
One team that could be very busy on draft night is the Portland Trail Blazers, who have been rumored to be in several talks with a number of different teams this summer.
According to The Oregonian's John Canzano, a league source has said that Portland has interest in restricted free-agent centers Tiago Splitter and Nikola Pekovic, but has also been involved in trade talks with the Phoenix Suns about acquiring center Marcin Gortat in exchange for the No. 10 overall pick.
Ford and Stein also reported that Portland was engaged in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers about acquiring the Nos. 1 and 19 overall picks in Thursday's draft:
"Sources say they reached out to the Portland Trail Blazers in an attempt to land LaMarcus Aldridge for the Nos. 1 and 19 picks. The Blazers quickly rebuffed them.
"
It's no surprise that Portland is unwilling to part ways with Aldridge. The 27-year-old forward is a two-time All-Star and a franchise cornerstone.
The Blazers will draft No. 10 overall on Thursday and have three second-round draft picks as well.
