Post-Spring: The Top 25 in College Football

Jeffrey FannMay 3, 2009

The NFL draft is done, and all the spring games are over, who makes the pre-pre-season top 25 in college in football?

1. Florida Gators

Tim Tebow is back and Urban Meyer is still the coach. Their schedule is about as easy as it gets for an SEC team. They avoid both Ole Miss and Alabama in West.  And outside of UGA, the East is not much opposition.

2. Oklahoma Sooners

If the offensive line comes together quickly, then Sam Bradford will have the second most explosive offensive in the country, after Florida's.

3. USC Trojans

The USC Trojans haven't actually played for the national title in a few years. What's going on in LA these days? Really, they're fine. They don't rebuild at USC they reload. A new QB has to be named, but USC still has more talent than anyone in the country. They need to avoid losing the game they have no business losing, like Oregon St. last year and Stanford the year before.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes
Terrelle Pryor might be most dangerous dual threat quarterback in the country. The Buckeyes will roll through the Big Ten.

5. Texas Longhorns

Quarterback Colt McCoy returns, and nobody outside of USC stockpiles talent the way Texas and Mack Brown do. Their showdown with Oklahoma will determine the Big 12's champion.

6. Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Cowboys are really good, I mean really good, especially on offense. But can their defense stop anyone? Yes, but they still can't get past Oklahoma and Texas.

7. Ole Miss Rebels

Was anybody outside of Florida, Utah USC playing any better to end last season? 16 starters return off a team that won 9 games.

8. Virginia Tech Hokies

The defending ACC Champions will be even better this year. While last year's team struggled to score points at times, this year they've settled on talented Tyrod Taylor at quarterback. Special teams and defense are always good in Blacksburg.

9. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Tide won't sneak up on anyone this season. Defense should be brick wall with nine returning starters. New quarterback Greg Mcelroy will still have Julio Jones to throw to, and that will make Mcelroy's job a lot easier.

10. Oregon Ducks
Former coach Mike Bellotti was replaced by offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. So much won't change at Oregon coming off a 10 win season. Unfortunately for the Ducks, the PAC 10 road still goes through USC.

11. LSU Tigers
LSU dismantled a good Georgia Tech team in the Chick-fil-A Bowl and found a quarterback in Jordan Jefferson all at the same time. Former defensive coordinator John Chavis from Tennessee should make the defense top notch.

12. TCU Horned Frogs
Gary Patterson's Horned Frogs are the first mid-majors to appear in the poll. They won 11 games last year and get an opportunity against one of the big boys early in the season, with a road trip to face the Clemson Tigers.

13. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
People just don't want to believe that Paul Johnson has only touched the surface of what his offense is capable of. If quarterback Josh Nesbitt improves in the passing game, Johnson's option offense could be unstoppable. Defense lost three defensive lineman to the NFL. And that is a question mark.

14. Boise State Broncos
Nobody should underestimate the Broncos anymore, and if Oregon does in an early season matchup, Boise St could run the table.

15. Georgia Bulldogs
The Dawgs had their shot at national championship last year, and blew it majorly. No pre-season No. 1 team this year. Coach Marc Richt recruits well and has plenty of talent on hand, but it will take some time to gel.

16. Florida State Seminoles
If quarterback Christian Ponder continues to develop, the Noles could find themselves in the ACC title game. Mickey Andrews still knows how to coach defense.

17. Penn State Nittany Lions

The Nittany Lions are coming off an 11-win season, but only return ten total starters. That one of the fewest totals in the Big 10. Coach Joe Paterno shows no signs of slowing down.

18. Cincinnati Bearcats

The Bearcats were super on defense last year, but only return one defensive starter. An opening game against a tough Rutgers team will tell a lot about how good Cincinnati will be.

19. Utah Utes

The Utes are coming off a spectacular 13-0 season. This year's quarterback is a big question mark, but the Utes have gotten to the point where they are good every year.

20. East Carolina Pirates

Coach Skip Holtz is putting together a solid program at East Carolina. The Pirates will face both West Virginia and a Virginia Tech Hokies team, seeking revenge for last year's defeat. So I doubt they can be a BCS Buster. Still, they are one very dangerous team.

21. Oregon State Beavers

Whenever you beat the USC Trojans, you've done something. This is exactly what the Beavers did last season. The Beavers are perfectly capable of finishing second in the PAC 10, with an offense that no one will want to face.

22. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Quarterback Graham Harrell is gone, so I don't think Texas Tech will making any runs at the BCS national title game. Mike Leach is to good a coach though, to let the Red Raiders fall to far.

23. Nebraska Cornhuskers

The former national power Nebraska Cornhuskers, might be looking at their best team in years. They aren't ready to take on the Oklahoma's or Texas's yet.  But coming off a nine-win season, which included a Gator Bowl win over Clemson, Nebraska is starting to turn the corner.

24. California Golden Bears

Jahvid Best might be the nation's best running back. And after missing spring practice with foot and elbow injuries, he'll be ready to go in the fall. I see no reason why the Golden Bears won't win eight or nine games. Coach Jeff Tedord usually puts together solid teams.

25. Clemson Tigers

Don't sleep on the Clemson Tigers, they are loaded at running back. With RB CJ Spiller returning, along with big time 2008 recruit Jamie Harper, and the surprise of the spring game Rendrick Taylor, they should have no problems running the ball. Now they just need to settle on whether Kyle Parker or Willie Korn will play quarterback.
