What Danny Ferry Owes Cleveland
I have always been critical of Mike Brown as the perfect fit for LeBron and the Cavaliers.
Paul Silas was hard-nosed and straight "old school."
His departure, coupled with Carlos Boozer's, set the franchise back in their quest compete at a championship level.
Meanwhile, a change in ownership took place that brought Danny Ferry back to Cleveland in hopes of bringing a parade to East 9th & Ontario.
Cavs fans learned first of Ferry as the heralded forward from Duke University. He opted to play overseas instead of participating in the NBA experience.
The Cavaliers flourished in mid '80s with Ron Harper, Mark Price, "Hot Rod", and others. Then the trade that would send the city into a clueless frenzy and hysteria.
Wayne Embry and the Gunds traded Ron Harper for the rights to Danny Ferry? Lenny Wilkins knew nothing about it and at some points refused to play the new edition.
Fans certainly didn't approve, but had no other choice but to stomach it. When Dan Gilbert named Ferry as Director of Operations, many quivered at the thought of him returning.
No one can argue Ferry's relentless yet calm approach to putting together a competitive winning franchise. It's just time to give credit where credit is due. The Finals seem like months away, but you can almost taste Cleveland's drought coming to an end.
Not so fast, my friend! There is plenty of work to be done, now that Ferry has put all the aces in their places. His job for now is complete, and it must feel real good to sit back and witness this run.
Many seem to think all the pressure is on LeBron James to close the deal for Cleveland this year. The many are confused—Mo Williams in the end will decide whether the Cavaliers will schedule a parade in June.
Danny Ferry combed the ends of the Earth to provide the Cavs with the second coming of Terrell Brandon, Mark Price, and yes even Andre Miller. Williams represents the dagger, the lights-out effect that one gets when privileged with full power. Mo to some is an All-Star by default....it is what it is.
Cleveland fans should hold off on thanking Ferry for potentially ending the streak. A cities championship drought that places itself in the "other" category. You know, the losers, chokers, the not-ready-yets, the fumble, shot, drive.
As true fans we can only cross our fingers and pray for this beautiful dream not to end.
