Saturday: The Greatest Sports Day of the Year

Jeff PencekMay 1, 2009

Super Bowl Sunday is a full day build-up to the spectacle event in the biggest sport in America. The first Friday of the NCAA Tournament is an unspoken male holiday, where half-days and sick days increase greatly through offices in America.

There are also other days during the year where multiple sports are relevant.

However, no day before May 2—and no day after—will be as fantastic a sports day. This is the ultimate day for a fan.

Just take a look at the events taking place, which encompass a huge spectrum of the sports world, and get your remote ready

All times Eastern:

1 p.m.: Game 1, Capitals vs. PenguinsNBC

This is the marquee NHL Series, featuring the two most recognizable names in the sport, Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Pittsburgh and Washington have other stars, but the spotlight will be magnified on these two, especially since they hate each other.

There will be hard hits, heated fights, and some excellent skating and passing. Let's just hope the game doesn't go to double-OT.

3 p.m.: Quail Hollow ChampionshipCBS

I have no clue what Quail Hollow is, but it sounds like a retirement community.

But Tiger Woods is playing, and in contention, which makes this mediocre-sounding tournament suddenly relevant. Phil Mickelson is pretty close also, making this fun to check in on.

3:40 p.m.: Mets vs. PhilliesFox

Baseball is the least relevant event this Saturday, although the Marlins versus Cubs earlier in the day, and the Rays versus Red Sox at night should provide some interesting entertainment.

The Mets-Phillies rivalry has grown with the last few Mets collapses.

6...something p.m.: Kentucky DerbyNBC

I'm pretty confident the world doesn't need a two hour pre-race show, so maybe 5:30 will be a good dinner time.

Twenty horses will run in a fantastic two minutes of sport. Find an OTB or race-betting track and put a few bucks down.

It's no fun to bet on favorites, and winning $15 isn't special, so have some fun. Put $5 on Nowhere to Hide or Mine That Bird, and get ready for a crazy night.

8 p.m.: Game 7, Bulls at CelticsTNT

How does either team have anything left?

I didn't think any series could be more fun in the first round than Warriors-Mavs circa 2007, but this absolute classic is becoming legendary. We will be shocked if it doesn't go to overtime.

This is the marquee event of the night, so find either a cool sports bar or invite friends over and get ready for a battle.

9 p.m: Game 2, Canucks vs Blackhawks VERSUS

With the basketball game being so big, this will be something you watch during commercial breaks and halftime.

Game 1 was decided in the last two minutes, and both teams are playing a physical, quick-paced style, making this much better than the commercials on TNT—except for the Dos Equis commercials.

Respect the Most Interesting Man in the World.

Approx. 11 p.m.: Ricky Hatton vs. Manny PacquaioPPV

If everything else wasn't fun enough, there is a major fight taking place.

Ricky Hatton fights are fun just for the crowd singing Blue Moon and Walking in A Hatton Wonderland. The English fans will be tanked and partying.

Manny Pacquaio is fun to watch because he is about action, coming forward, and landing as many hard punches as possible.

This is a huge fight, so even if you are a boxing novice, this is a worthwhile fight to buy.

Baseball, hockey, golf, horse racing, basketball, and boxing are all relevant on Saturday, making this a day that sports fans fantasize about and budget for when you have to buy flowers and dinner for your girl on Sunday.
