Roberto Martinez: Why Everton Should Make Him Their New Manager

Sam TigheMay 28, 2013

According to multiple news sources, including Sky Sports News, Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has told club owner Dave Whelan he wants to leave this summer.

After six wonderful playing years with the Latics, the Spaniard returned to the DW Stadium to manage and escaped three successive relegation dogfights between 2009 and 2012.

The club's luck ran out, though, in 2013, as they finally succumbed to the drop despite winning the FA Cup for the first time in history.

Speculation has been rife regarding Martinez's future, and the 39-year-old has now reportedly resigned as manager.

Despite a relegation blotting the copybook, the former Swansea boss is widely regarded as a bright young tactician with a huge future in the game.

He'll attract a lot of interest over the course of the summer, and manager-less Everton should be at the front of the queue.

Losing David Moyes after more than a decade of service was a bitter pill to swallow for the Toffees, and fresh optimism around the club can be generated by appointing an exciting manager.

Martinez can be that man.

He brings beautiful possession football and tactical flexibility to the table, making every game he takes charge of an enthralling watch.

It's arguable that his tactics were too advanced for a mediocre Wigan squad, and it led to defensive mistakes, but that won't be an issue at Everton considering their stellar roster.

Many fans have pondered whether the Toffees could switch to a three-man defence to release Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman, and Martinez is the man who can make that happen.

There would be no more protecting one-goal leads, and above all Martinez would be a long-term project in the same mould of Moyes' reign.

He's young, he's hungry and he shows more loyalty than most in football.

The Mirror clocked Vitor Pereira as the favourite for the job last week but he's a big, big risk. Bill Kenwright would be wiser to stick with the English Premier League-proven manager who also carries a little European flair.
