How Dumping His Management Team Will Hurt Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open Chances

Eric BostJun 7, 2018

The U.S. Open is coming up, and Rory McIlroy's name will automatically be thrown in among the list of contenders.

It's been an up and down year for McIlroy, but in recent weeks golf fans have seen him get back in the swing of things (no pun intended) as he prepares for next month's major championship.

But instead of focusing on living up to his potential and racking up victories at majors, McIlroy is busy with the business side of golf.

Rory McIlroy is trying to be golf's own Jay-Z.

Now, the world's No. 2 golfer isn't from New York and he's not the best in his profession right now, but these two do have something in common.

The Irish Independent reported that McIlroy is leaving Horizon Management so that he can start his own management company with his relatives and close friends. He will become the second biggest name to do this in as many months after hip-hop mogul Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter began Roc Nation Sports in April.

For McIlroy, however, creating his own management at this time in his career is not the best move for him, especially after seeing the endorsements that Horizon Management has given him in the last year.

While some of the world's biggest stars like Roger Federer and Tiger Woods let their closest friends manage them, Rory is not in the same place as a professional just yet.

Both Tiger and Federer amassed countless amounts of victories from the beginning of their careers up until now. Although McIlroy has been well-known for the last few years, he only has one major win to his name.

Not only that, but Rory hasn't had the greatest 2013 season. Although he has improved his play with a few top 10 finishes as of late, he still has yet to tally a win.

What Rory should be focusing on is winning another major before he begins his own management company. By putting the media attention on this and taking it away from his golf game is just another reason why Rory McIlroy isn't ready to take the next step in his career.
