Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Must Part Ways with Wayne Rooney

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

With Wayne Rooney's relevance on Manchester United shrinking, it's time for the Red Devils to part ways with the star.

Of course, we don't have to tell Rooney this. Check out what FIFA.com passed along:

It would be kind of funny if Sir Alex Ferguson decided to just make up a few things as he retires, but I highly doubt this is the case. Also, BBC Sport passed along this tidbit:

Not that it really took these comments to start speculating on Rooney's future. It was only natural that Rooney would look for a club where he'd have a more defined role.

Since Robin van Persie arrived at Old Trafford, Rooney has been a bit of an odd man out. He's flashed some skill at a central midfield position, but there's little doubt the 27-year-old would still like to be a featured striker.

It's clear that Rooney is not going to be happy continuing with the Red Devils, and the club certainly doesn't need that distraction.

They have bigger things to worry about. Like reuniting with an old friend.

The Daily Mail's Neil Ashton reported that the Red Devils are “confident of securing the return” of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Obviously, if this is the case, there is even less of a reason to keep Rooney around. Besides the fact that keeping him on the roster would mean he couldn't land on the roster of a rival, there would be little need for Rooney in a Devils' uniform other than depth, but that would be some pricey depth.

Rooney is under a lucrative contract until 2015

The Red Devils would be far better off using that money on Ronaldo, or on a player or players who have a far more defined role.

Whichever direction they decide to go in, it can't be a direction that involves Rooney.
