Frank Lampard's Top 5 Chelsea Goals

Garry HayesJun 8, 2018

He's done it! Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard that Frank Lampard is now officially Chelsea's all-time highest goalscorer after bagging a brace against Aston Villa in the Blues' 2-1 victory on Saturday.

That win meant the Blues secured Champions League football for next season, but more significantly for Chelsea's No. 8, his double strike moves him to 203 goals, one more than the previous record holder Bobby Tambling.

Similar to Lampard today, Tambling was a hero to Chelsea fans throughout his time at Stamford Bridge in the 1960s and 1970s. Given that he wasn't even a striker, and that his record spanned five decades, says it all about the type of player he was.

With Lampard now surpassing him, it outlines just what an incredible player he has been also, since signing for a mere £11 million from West Ham United in 2001.

The 12 years that have followed have seen him score goals to seal FA Cups and Premier League titles. But of the 203, what ranks as his best? It's a discussion that will rage on for a long time yet, we're sure.  So to get the debate moving, we at Bleacher Report pick our top five Lampard Chelsea goals.

5. Levski Sofia (2001)

1 of 5

Where would football be without sentiment? This may not be Frank Lampard's most extravagant finish in a Chelsea shirt, but his goal against Levski Sofia in September 2001 to seal a 3-0 win for the Blues is the perfect place to start as he opened his account for the Blues.

Ironically, the goal is remarkably similar to his second against Aston Villa that sealed the goalscoring record. Ghosting into the box, he evades his marker before chipping the goalkeeper after his initial effort deflected back off the Sofia stopper.

It wasn't vintage Lampard by any stretch, but Chelsea fans would soon get used to those trademark late runs that have proved so devastating since.

4. Lazio (2003)

The beauty of Frank Lampard is that he can score from anywhere. It makes him just as much a nuisance for the opposition, yet for Chelsea fans he has kept them on the edge of their seats for over a decade.

If our fifth-ranked goal against Levski Sofia outlined the beginning stages of his expertly timed movement into the box to finish off an attacking move, this strike against Lazio demonstrated how deadly he could be outside the box.

The Blues were trailing 1-0 to Lazio in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge in October 2003 and it was Lampard's strike that pulled them level. Adrian Mutu went on to score the winner in Chelsea's 2-1 victory, but it was Lampard who grabbed the headlines with this sublime effort.

3. Bolton Wanderers (2005)

So this is where we cheat and give you two goals for the price of one.

Chelsea hadn't lifted the league title since 1955 when Ted Drake led them to a surprise victory in English football's top flight. The intervening half century had been a painful one at times for Chelsea fans, but then up stepped Frank Lampard to help them realize their dreams.

The Blues headed into this clash at the Reebok Stadium on the back of a goalless draw with Liverpool in the Champions League semifinal. They would play the Reds again at Anfield in the second leg just three days later, but it didn't take their focus off winning what would be just their second league crown in 100 years.

Lampard was the man who sealed it, too, scoring twice to give Chelsea a well-earned victory on the day, and also the season, as Jose Mourinho's side ran away with the title with three games to spare.

2. Barcelona (2006)

4 of 5

It's a question many still ask even now, seven years on—did he mean it?

The goal we're referring to of course is Frank Lampard's outrageous effort against Barcelona in the Champions League in 2006.

Barca fans are used to their own players turning on the style at the Nou Camp, but they all played second fiddle to Lampard on this October evening as the Englishman lobbed Victor Valdes from the touchline.

Looking up, he surveyed the scene before him for a moment. With little options in attack, he attempted a goal that he would never score again, with his bending effort ricocheting into the net off Valdes' far post. It was a one-off, but oh my, what a fine strike it was.

Chelsea had been trailing 1-0 to a Deco goal, with Lampard's effort pulling them level. Chelsea old boy Eidur Gudjohnsen put the Catalans back in front, although Didier Drogba's 90th-minute equalizer sealed a 2-2 draw.

1. Bayern Munich (2005)

5 of 5

There have been some special strikes from Frank Lampard in a Chelsea shirt, but this tops them all.

We've seen pile drivers, great team goals, tap-ins and the odd solo effort, but nothing can compare to Lampard's strike against Bayern Munich in the 2004/05 Champions League.

Chelsea fans have chanted "Super Frank" for well over a decade and it's moments like this that remind us why.

Claude Makelele's pass was already difficult enough for Lampard to control. So for the midfielder to not only pluck it out of the air with his chest, but swivel to steady himself before rifling his effort beyond Oliver Kahn with his so-called weaker foot, is nothing short of extraordinary.

The proverb reads that a "picture paints a thousand words". If that's so, future generations of football fans need only watch this goal to learn of what Lampard was capable of.
