Kentucky Derby 2013 Payout: Full Rundown of All Betting Action
There was some real money to be made at the 2013 Kentucky Derby, as bettors who fancied long shot Golden Soul to place or show made off like bandits in the night.
Of course, betting favorite Orb is the horse that won the race.
Jockey Joel Rosario guided his steed with a steady hand, and the duo conquered the muddy track at Churchill Downs with aplomb. By the time it was all said and done, Orb defeated the field by a comfortable margin, as you can plainly see here, courtesy of Buzzfeed News:
Revolutionary—another heavy favorite to win—finished in third place, earning any bettors that picked him to show a minor return.

Golden Soul—a 34-1 long shot to win at the start or the race—finishing in second place was a huge surprise. This horse hadn't yet won a race in 2013 before Saturday, and his only victory came in his maiden race.
Orb's victory from the No. 16 post will certainly cause bettors in the future to heavily consider horses that land that post. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Orb is the second horse in the past three years to win from that spot, and five horses have won from No. 16 in the past 19 years.
Bettors can be a superstitious lot, and if another top horse lands that spot next year, you can bet he'll garner a huge amount of interest.
Verrazano was one of the horses expected to challenge Revolutionary and Orb this year. At the start of the race, he was being given 8-1 odds to win. Unfortunately, Verrazano finished in 14th place and suffered a scary-looking injury in the process of fighting for position.
Another big disappointment was the poor showing by Goldencents. He was given 7-1 odds to win, had an ideal starting spot at the No. 8 post and was one of the fastest horses in the field. A 17th-place finish by Goldencents was something nobody saw coming.
Now, heading into the Preakness Stakes in two weeks time, the biggest question on everyone's mind will be whether or not Orb has what it takes to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
It's been 35 years since Affirmed accomplished this feat.
After such a convincing victory in poor conditions, however, expectations will be high for Orb.
He'll certainly be the heavy betting favorite heading into the Preakness. Should he win that race, there will be no end to the scrutiny and speculation from experts and fans alike about his chances to complete the holy trinity of American horse racing.
