Kentucky Derby 2013 Video: Highlights, Analysis and Earnings for Every Horse
The winner of the 2013 Kentucky Derby is none other than Orb, who was guided by jockey Joel Rosario. With the win, Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey won his first career Kentucky Derby.
So how did it all transpire at Churchill Downs?
This wasn't your average Kentucky Derby, as the 139th Run for the Roses was marred by sloppy weather conditions. That includes a muddy course, scattered rains storms and below 60 degree weather in Louisville, Ky. (via The Weather Channel).
Even still, Orb managed to pull away and win with a phenomenal late push.
And thus, another horse has entered its name into the history books.
Orb was followed by Golden Soul and Revolutionary, who started in the fourth and third post, respectively. Golden Soul was led by jockey Robby Albarado, while three-time Kentucky Derby champion Calvin Borel was atop Revolutionary.

It wasn't easy for Orb, as the pack was tight throughout a majority of the race.
Golden Soul finished in second place and had opportunities, but simply failed to cash in. The Calvin Borel-led Revolutionary was also in position to pull out the victory, but it was Orb who proved worthy of the high pre-race odds.
With a powerful run to the finish line, Orb crashed through to get the victory.
This marks Rosario and McGaughey's first career Kentucky Derby wins, respectively.
It is also the third consecutive running in which the winning jockey was a first-time winner, which simply proves what had previously been believed: Nothing is certain at the Kentucky Derby, no matter the odds.
With that being said, Orb was the most heavily favored horse entering the race, per Bovada. Even with winless Derby leaders, there was no question that Orb, the winner of the Florida Derby, could pull this out.
As McGaughey put it, this is one special horse.
The question is, how much further can he go?
A horse hasn't won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. For those unfamiliar, the Triple Crown requires a horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in one season of racing.
The 138th running of the Preakness Stakes will take place on May 18, 2013.
Regardless of what happens at the upcoming event, Orb has made history by winning one of the most prestigious races in the horse-racing world. In turn, both he and jockey Joel Rosario have entered the realm of the elite.
This is a glorious day for Stuart Janney III, Ogden Mills Phipps, Rosario, Shug McGaughey and, of course, Orb.
