Top Contenders to Watch
No. 3 Revolutionary
While Revolutionary was overlooked throughout the past couple of weeks, it is slowly becoming a top contender for the Kentucky Derby.
The horse has come on strong in recent months as it has won its past three races. Plus, a relatively inside post will help utilize the horse's pure speed.
However, the best thing Revolutionary has going for it is Calvin Borel. The veteran jockey has won this event three times in his career and knows what it takes to get into the winner's circle. He has what it takes to guide his horse to victory in this one.
No. 8 Goldencents
Goldencents has won three of its last four races, the last one being the prestigious Santa Anita Derby. In that event, it showed the ability to get out to a fast start and stayed near the front of the pack from wire-to-wire.
With the No. 8 post, it should be able to get to the rail in a hurry and set its own pace in the crowded field.
Additionally, the horse was trained by Doug O'Neill, who led I'll Have Another to a win at last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before being forced to scratch at the Belmont. He is looking to get to the next level and win the Triple Crown.
Goldencents has as good of a chance as any to accomplish this rare feat.
No. 16 Orb
After a mediocre start to its career, Orb has come on strong to be one of the toughest horses to beat. It has now won four races in a row, including the Grade 1 Florida Derby.
Shug McGaughey has plenty of experience training championship horses, and Orb can be the next in line. It has shown the ability to win while staying inside as well as going wide and passing late, either of which could be needed in the Kentucky Derby.
The far outside post would usually hurt most horses' chances to win, but Orb has enough talent to overcome the position and get a win.
