Kentucky Derby 2013: Horses That Will Bring Up the Rear
Nobody remembers the losers, but every race has them.
The 2013 Kentucky Derby will be no different, and there are a few horses that are most likely to finish well behind the leaders.
There are 20 horses scheduled to hit the dirt track at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4.
This mile-and-a-quarter dirt track is a grueling test of endurance, speed and tactics, and only the strongest horses are capable of outpacing the pack.
Here's a quick look at where each horse will line up on Saturday, along with the latest odds for each horse, courtesy of NBC Sports (via WDRB's Steve Andress). After the chart, I'll break down which horses can be counted on to bring up the rear.

Black Onyx: Post No. 1 (50-1 Odds)
Back in the day, before the Derby featured so many horses, landing the No. 1 post was considered to be a good thing.
But the last time any horse won from this spot was in 1986 when Ferdinand won the Derby, and the last time any horse finished in the money was in 1988.
Black Onyx isn't the horse to break this trend.
According to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, trainer Kelly Breen was not hot on the idea of starting this race on the rail:
Making matters worse is the fact that Black Onyx will be jostling with the likes of Revolutionary and Oxbow for position early in the race—a fact that doesn't bode well for this horse.
Winner of two lesser races in 2013, this horse hasn't faced the level of competition he'll see on Saturday, and in the end Black Onyx will finish somewhere near the back of the pack.
Golden Soul: Post No. 4 (50-1 Odds)
A late entry into the field, Golden Soul will struggle at this year's Derby.
With just one career victory (none this year) and two poor races in a row before this one, Golden Soul is well out of his league against the top horses in this race. He'll start next to Revolutionary—one of the top horses in the field—and will struggle to keep up with the hard-charging horse.
Taking a look at Golden Soul's pedigree, his sire, Perfect Soul, was known as a top turf racer that excelled at mile-long races but that struggled with stamina.
This is also the case with Golden Soul, and even if this horse gets off to a strong start, it will fade down the stretch.
Falling Sky: Post No. 13 (50-1 Odds)
Besides the fact that Falling Sky drew a traditionally difficult post, this is a horse that lacks the stamina needed to win at Churchill Downs. In his six career starts, Falling Sky has won three times—all of which came with this horse as a front-runner.
A pure sprinter, Falling Sky will start next to Goldencents and will likely push the pace hard in the early goings. According to Mike Welsch of Daily Racing Form, it will be tough for jockey Luis Saez to keep his horse in check early:
Unfortunately, the last quarter mile will doom this horse, and it won't be a shock to see Falling Sky cross the finish line last when it's all said and done.
This race requires both speed and stamina, and Falling Sky lacks the latter.
