NFL Coaching Carousel: AFC East

Michael WhooleyApr 26, 2009

Every off-season, fantasy owners, and football fans in general, tune in to find out which free agents are heading where. Signings like T.O. heading to the Buffalo Bills and TJ Houshmandzadeh's journey to the Northwest, where he'll join the Seattle Seahawks, are analyzed and scrutinized by everyone from ESPN to the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you as everyone attempts to figure out how these new additions will fit in in their new systems.

Strangely enough though, the coaching changes that occur each and every off-season garner much less attention despite these holding much more significance. After all, the coaches are the ones devising the systems that guys like T.O. and Housh will be playing in. But, don't worry, the Bruno Boys, as usual, have you covered as we take a look at the Coaching Carousel of the NFL, breaking down all the important coaching changes division by division. This stop, the AFC East.

New York Jets' Head Coach

Out: Eric Mangini
In: Rex Ryan

Brett Favre, a coach killer? With the New York Jets showing Eric Mangini the door, following a 9-7 season, it sure seems that way. Favre was brought to New York for one reason only, to get the Jets into the playoffs. With the team falling short, management felt it was time for Mangini to go. In his stead, the Jets welcome former Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan, to town.

Obviously, in bringing Ryan to New York , the Jets are looking to bolster their defense, which with the Jets finishing as only the 16th best defense in 2008, isn't such a bad idea. Ryan, who was the man behind the Ravens' No.2 finish in defense last season may not have the same weapons he had in Baltimore to work with, but the man is a defensive guru and should help the Jets move up in those defensive rankings.

As for the offensive side of things, Ryan got a gift as the Jets were able to trade up in this year's draft to nab QB Mark Sanchez, who is a much better prospect to have under center than Kellen Clemens.

Still, even in acquiring Sanchez, don't look for the Jets to be pass happy as they sometimes were with Favre under center. Coming from Baltimore, Ryan is likely to employ the same strategy in New York that the Ravens use to win games - ball control on offense, relying heavily on the run game, partnered up with a strong defense. That strategy will benefit Jets' running back, Thomas Jones, and should help make Sanchez's transition to the NFL a bit easier.
