No Surprises: Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions Agree to Six-Year Deal
As draft day looms, the mystery of the top pick, which really wasn't all that much of a mystery, has been solved.
As expected, University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford agreed to a six-year contract with the Detroit Lions, officially becoming the No. 1 pick of the 2009 NFL Draft.
Stafford was the favorite to be the top pick, along with Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith, and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry. But with the Lions' abysmal passing game, quarterback was the direction they needed to go.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Unofficially, St. Louis is on the clock.
The deal is rumored to be in the neighborhood of $41 million guaranteed with a maximum value with incentives of about $78 million, making him the richest draft prospect in history.
Stafford led Georgia to wins in the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl and the 2009 Capital One Bowl.
Fellow Bulldog teammates Knowshon Moreno and Mohammed Massaquoi follow Stafford from the "Hedges" to the draft.
Stafford joins JaMarcus Russell, Alex Smith, David Carr, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, and Carson Palmer as quarterbacks drafted No. 1 overall in the 2000s.
Stafford is the first Georgia player to be drafted No. 1 since end Harry Babcock in 1953, drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.
All that remains is the formal announcement and the famous jersey photos in Radio City Music Hall at around 4:10 p.m. ET on Saturday.
