I'd Expect a Major Turn This Sunday at Backlash

Bryan HaasApr 24, 2009

As a lifelong professional wrestling fan, I sense a major screw-job looming on the horizon for this Sunday at Backlash.

Given the unpredictable nature of any storyline in professional wrestling, this is speculation naturally, but here’s how I see things shaping up;

One of the main situations currently taking precedent in the WWE is that of the McMahons versus the Legacy.

Report: Pistons, Thunder Make Trade

Legacy leader Randy Orton has been making waves over the last few months by brutalizing members of the McMahon family, namely WWE owner Vince McMahon and his son Shane.

Orton upped the ante soon after when he RKO’ed “the Billion Dollar Princess,” Vince’s daughter Stephanie. This brought WWE champion Triple H (Stephanie’s real life husband) to the ring, and created the basis for a match with some of the biggest implications of late in pro wrestling.

The stage has been set for a six-man tag team match at this Sunday’s pay per view, initially announced as the team of Vince, Shane and Triple H doing battle against Orton and his Legacy minions, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr.

Recently Vince bowed out of the match in favor of the returning Dave Batista.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

The stipulation of the bout, as announced by Raw GM Vickie Guerrero, states that should Orton’s team emerge victorious, he would become the new WWE champion. She went on to say that even in the event of the champs team being disqualified or counted out, Orton would still win the title.

Let us not forget, folks, that Shane is a second generation superstar, as is Rhodes. Orton and DiBiase are both third generation wrestlers, as both their fathers and grandfathers are veterans of the squared circle. DiBiase's grandmother Helen Hild, was also a pro wrestler.

Furthermore, Shane was accidentally speared by Batista on Raw this past Monday, giving him even more reason to cost his team the match.

I’m sensing a major turn this Sunday. Shane making that turn would make the most sense, but you can never rule out Vince, Stephanie, or even Batista.

Whatever happens, this match promises to be an instant classic, as are a majority of matches with these type of implications.

In any event, Orton is likely leaving Backlash with Triple H’s belt.
