In Jerry Reese We Should Trust!

Pat DorisApr 23, 2009

With the 2009 NFL Draft rapidly approaching, there are many questions about what direction the New York Giants might go.

Do they ship some picks away for Braylon Edwards or Anquan Boldin? Do they stay with the 29th pick and take a USC linebacker or James Lauranitis or a WR such as Hakeem Nicks, Darius Heyward-Bey, or Rutger's very own Kenny Britt? No matter what desicion they make GM Jerry Reese has earned my trust.

After taking over the general manager role from Ernie Accorsi in January of 2007, his decisions and knowledge of the game almost instantly made the Giants into a Super Bowl champion.

In his first draft in 2007 Reese brought in a good talented group of players who helped the Giants en route to their Super Bowl run. He drafted eight players who all participated in the postseason: Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, and Ahmad Bradshaw were some notable players who had great contributions in the post season.

Also, before replacing Accorsi he had scouted players such as Osi Umenyiora, David Diehl, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs, Chris Snee, Mathias Kiwanuka, Barry Coefield, and Super Bowl hero David Tyree as the team's talent scout.

The Giants have 10 picks in the upcoming draft. Five of those picks are inside the first three rounds of the draft. The more probable route could be a WR and it seems like Hakeem Nicks would be the projected pick at this point. Nick's a WR out the University of North Carolina and is 6'1" and 212 pounds. At the NFL Combine he posted a 4.63 40-yard dash with a 36'' vertical.

I personally want the Giants to get either an established WR like Edwards, Boldin, or Chad OchoCinco, or take a rookie receiver. If they were to turn to the draft for a rookie receiver this is what I would do: trade up and get Crabtree! He would have an immediate impact and create that dynamic receiver the Giants lack.

It would take an incredible amount of wheeling-and-dealing to trade up and get him, but he is apparently a "rare" talent. Crabtree is  6'2", 215 pounds out of Texas Tech.

Even though he suffered a slight stress fracture in his left foot, he is still projected as a top-five pick to the Cleveland Browns, who have Braylon Edwards. And I don't see the Giants trading with the Browns unless it's for Braylon Edwards, but I can only hope.
