Ole Miss Players Have Trouble With the Law

SECLiveNews.comApr 23, 2009

In one of the more bizarre stories we have heard about a players arrest, for some reason we aren't surprised this is coming out of Oxford, Miss.

On Sunday morning, Ole Miss football player Enrique Davis was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct when he wouldn't comply with an officers request to produce an I.D.

Defensive tackle Jerrell Powe was given a noise citation and arrested at his residence, as well. According to the police report, when Powe was given the citation, he was asked by the officer to read the citation and sign his name. Powe then "stated he couldn't read."

When the officer said he would issue the citation whether he read the information or not, Powe "finally read the citation information and signed."

This doesn't really sound that out of the ordinary—someone gets arrested and lies to the police to get out of trouble or just to give them trouble. However, for the last two years, Powe's struggle to be academically eligible raises the question: Can he actually read?

Coach Houston Nutt commented on the situation, saying: "Of course he can read, how do you think he's getting through college? Now he just needs to learn to keep his mouth shut."

Nutt went on to say that both Powe and Davis were being punished internally and that Powe's punishment would be worse because "he should know better. He should be an example for the younger guys."

Well, that clarifies the situation completely.

In another Rebel run-in with the law, Ole Miss signee Jamar Hornsby is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court in Starkville on April 29.

Hornsby was arrested on March 1 on charges of aggravated assault and petit larceny after he and two fellow East Mississippi Community College teammates allegedly assaulted a man in a McDonald’s drive-through.

This case has more than just a small punishment or playing time at stake. Since Hornsby was previously arrested for misdemeanor credit card fraud while a member of the Florida football team, Florida state officials are watching closely to see if Hornsby is in violation of the terms of his probation.

Likewise, Coach Nutt and the university are watching for the verdict since Hornsby was considered a leading contender to replace hard-hitting strong safety Jamarca Sanford.
