Masters 2013 Payout: What Some of the Week's Biggest Surprises Earned

Tim KeeneyJun 8, 2018

Adam Scott is $1 million and one green jacket richer. Tiger Woods added more than a quarter of a million dollars in what I can only imagine is pocket change for him. Even Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson pulled in nice paychecks despite disappointing weeks.

Yup, the golfing world's brightest stars somehow found a way to make us simple folk even more jealous on Sunday afternoon at Augusta.

But it wasn't just payday for the big boys. Let's take a look at how some of the week's biggest surprises fared at the Masters.

Thorbjorn Olesen: $278,000

After finishing ninth in the Open Championship and 27th in the PGA Championship last year, it's certainly not a surprise that Olesen had success this weekend.

But a sixth-place finish for a 23-year-old appearing in his first ever Masters? Hardly anyone was expecting that.

And after bringing in just over a quarter of a mill, it's safe to say he'll be back to continue his rise as one of golf's most promising—and soon-to-be richest—stars.

Tianlang Guan: $0

Try to imagine being 14 years old. Now try to imagine being handed over $18,000 at that time.

Man, that's a lot of Butterfingers and MLB Showdown packs.

Unfortunately for Guan, who not only made history by becoming the youngest golfer ever at the Masters but finished 58th overall to boot, his amateur status made it illegal for him to collect pro money (via ESPN's Darren Rovell):

Something tells me that won't be his last chance to make some—ahem—major money.

Fred Couples: $145,600

I'm guessing the 53-year-old Couples, who won the Masters in 1992, has 14 Tour wins under his belt and has finished in the top 10 at a major 26 times, has enough money to last him for quite some time.

Nevertheless, by finishing 13th and proving to the world that he's still a major competitor, he was able to pull in $145,600 towards his cushy retirement fund.

That's not much less than the $270,000 he earned for winning the tournament 21 years ago.
