Masters 2013: Under-the-Radar Contenders to Watch over Weekend

Jun 8, 2018

The 2013 Masters produced plenty of headlines on Thursday and Friday, but putting on the green jacket on Sunday is what the tournament is really all about.

If you've been tracking the tournament at all, you've certainly heard of Jason Day's strong start. You've heard that Tiger is set up to contend throughout the weekend. And you've definitely heard that 14-year-old phenom Tianlang Guan became the youngest player in the modern era to make the cut.

However, there's a whole field of contenders that failed to make headlines.

Look for these names to start taking the media spotlight for themselves as they make a charge at Day over the final two days of the tournament.

Angel Cabrera

Cabrera really shouldn't be able to sneak up on anyone this weekend. But with the little fanfare he's received in the first two days, that's exactly what he's set up to do.

He's one of the few men in the top of the field that can say he's already won a Masters tournament. He won the green jacket in 2009.

He can also lay claim to one of the hottest finishes to Round 2 in the field. He closed out with incredible focus, finding a way to birdie five of the last six holes.

Cabrera already has two major titles under his belt. He doesn't consistently play well on the tour, but he's more than capable of rising to the occasion and contending at Augusta. As Justin Ray of ESPN points out, Augusta has been kind to him.

Brandt Snedeker

Snedeker was having a better 2013 than just about anyone in the early going this season. He finished in the top three in four of the first five tournaments he played this year.

Then a rib injury halted any momentum he had. He failed to even make the cut in the two tournaments prior to Augusta.

Now that the pressure is on, Snedeker seems to be rising to the occasion. He's fired back-to-back 70s to come in at  -4 for the tournament and T4 on the leaderboard.

With consistency like that, it's safe to say that he's rounding back into his early-season form at just the right time. He'll be a name to watch throughout the weekend.

Lee Westwood

Coming in at 3-under after the first two rounds, Lee Westwood is only three shots off the lead going into the weekend. The fact that Westwood is in the hunt should surprise no one. Westwood has been one of the most consistent competitors at Augusta in recent history (h/t Justin Ray).

Westwood got off to a bad start by double bogeying the very first hole of the tournament but has played well since then. He only has two other bogeys in his first two rounds, including just one in his second round.

With only two birdies in his second round, Westwood isn't really doing anything out of the ordinary to compete. He's just making the right shots and keeping himself alive. As players ahead of him are sure to melt down, Westwood's patient approach could have him right in the thick of things come Sunday's final round.
