Masters 2013 Leaderboard: Where Biggest Stars Stand Going into 3rd Round

Joseph ZuckerJun 3, 2018

The Augusta National Golf Course has made it a habit to treat some of golf's biggest legends as if they're rank amateurs. The 2013 Masters is no different.

After what was a rather tame first round, the weather became a factor in the second. Heavy winds wreaked havoc on quite a few golfers. You could see shots that would normally be landing on the fairway or green instead ending up in a bunker, or worse the water.

The scores from Friday were generally pretty low, as evidenced by where the leaders are after two rounds.

As with any big tournament, there's plenty of fun in watching largely unknown golfers shot to prominence on the strength of a major win. More likely, though, your eyes first look for how the biggest stars on the tour fared. It can be either encouraging to see your favorites near the top, or a case of schadenfreude as that golfer you've never liked struggles massively.

With plenty of big names on the leaderboard, here is where some of the major stars stand going into the third day of action.

Tiger Woods: -1, T19

There's very little doubt that Tiger Woods is back now, or at least as back as he could possibly be. Nobody should expect Woods to reach his prime as he's 37 years old. That doesn't mean he can't continue to be the best in the world.

Woods was on imperious form before getting a bogey on No. 15. An approach shot hit the flag stick, then bounced into the water. Woods managed to save himself somewhat getting just the bogey. It still doesn't cover up what was a very strong Saturday for him.

Just five strokes back from Jason Day, Woods is primed to make a run at the title this weekend.

Rory McIlroy: -2, T14

The No. 2 player in the world hasn't been solid if unspectacular in the first two rounds. Rory McIlroy actually managed to better his score in the second round, which is an accomplishment considering how the weather dragged many golfers' scores down.

McIlroy is sitting in a tie for 14th after posting a two-under 142 over the first two rounds. He didn't start the second round well after bogeying two of his first three holes. Those bogeys were erased with an eagle on No. 8.

Phil Mickelson has had a Masters to forget. At three over for the tournament, there wasn't much worry that he would miss the cut, but he made it a little too close.

Mickelson had trouble all day with the wind, and it resulted in a horrible back nine. He had three bogeys and a double-bogey in a six-hole stretch. After finishing the first round at one over, there was the chance that Lefty could make his way to the top of the leaderboard.

With a four-over 76 on Friday, Mickelson's shot at a fourth Masters title is all but out of the question.

Bubba Watson: +4, T55

The reigning Masters champion very nearly missed the cut. Finishing at four over for the first two rounds, Bubba Watson was exactly 10 shots behind the leader, allowing him to continue through the weekend.

Watson had a disastrous first round, shooting a three-over 75. He was only slightly better on Friday, finishing one-over 73 on the day. The second round was extremely up and down for Watson, as he had seven birdies but six bogeys and a double-bogey as well.

Repeating as champion isn't an option any more, but Watson can earn himself a little more money with an ascent up the leaderboard.
