Masters Standings 2013: What Experts Are Saying Following Day 1

Maxwell OgdenJun 8, 2018

The 2013 Masters Tournament is officially underway, with the top golfers in the world taking center stage at Augusta National. We've seen stars shine, underdogs step up and amateurs defy logic by posting great days in a birdie-filled first round.

So what are the experts saying following Day One?

The leaderboard took shape early, as England's David Lynn shot a 4-under par to set the standard for the day. The field soon reacted, as Australian golfer Marc Leishman went 6-under to post the top scorecard of the day.

Sergio Garcia soon stunned the field and tied Leishman

Believe it or not, the stars weren't even the topic of conversation.

As Garcia, Leishman and Lynn worked their way up the leaderboard, a virtual unknown emerged as the star of the competition. It wasn't the kid who made the jump from the college ranks or the veteran making a push for their first major.

It was a 14-year-old by the name of Tianlang Guan.

The issues in life.

Rachel Nichols wasn't the only figure to speak on Guan's success. In fact, Guan's success was the buzz of the Twittersphere as history took center stage with his 1-over outing.

Numbers Never Lie steps in for the informative piece of this bit.

Chances are, Mark O'Meara never thought he'd play in the same tournament as someone like this.

Through all of the hype for Guan, there was another individual that stepped up and shined under the bright lights of Augusta. In fact, there were numerous veterans who put on performances to remember.

One of those players was Garcia.

Entering the 2013 Masters Tournament, Garcia is without a major championship win. Despite owning 18 wins between the PGA Tour and European Tour, Garcia has always come up short on the grandest of stages.

Not today.

An incredible first round performance by Sergio.

Garcia wasn't the only veteran to step up, as the legendary Fred Couples managed a first round score of 4-under par. Couples, 53, won the 1992 Masters Tournament and always seems to piece together solid performances while at Augusta.

Time and time again.

The legacy continues to be solidified.

As for how common this was, note that Couples' success is not just a flashback to 1992. Instead, Couples has been one of the most consistent golfers in the world.

Specifically at the Masters.

Extraordinary.

Couples wasn't the only American to experience success, as Dustin Johnson shot 5-under par to round off a day in which he hit just one bogey. That includes an eagle and four birdies.

Unfortunately, one writer took the pessimistic route of evaluation.

We believe in you, Johnson.

The Masters Tournament continues on Friday, Apr. 12. In that time, we'll see Guan and the rest of this star-studded field compete for glory and a green jacket.
