Masters Weather 2013: Updated Day 1 Forecast at Augusta
The Masters will have a stormy beginning in the first two rounds of play but the sunshine should break through on Saturday and Sunday, per the AccuWeather.com forecast (h/t Augusta.com).
Though we're still expecting a high of 83 degrees for the opening round of play, an afternoon thunderstorm looms. If this does indeed suspend play, the delay could force some major changes as the forecast for Thursday evening is even more dank.
The thunderstorms could get severe at that point and the temperature is expected to dip a little.
Friday's forecast is looking a little bit better, but more rain and another possible thunderstorm could further delay play. This could adversely affect players who have already teed off and possibly found themselves a rhythm.
Waiting on suitable playing weather can certainly rattle a player who has gotten off to a good start.
The forecast for Saturday and Sunday looks excellent. Augusta National should be as beautiful as ever under sunny skies and temperatures as high as 77 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday.
Because of possible delays on Thursday and Friday, players could either be forced to play 36 holes in a day, or even finish up on Monday to make up for lost time.
Per Augusta.com, these adjustments were made in 1936, 1938, 1939, 1961 and 1973.
In 1938, weather delayed play until Saturday. Players had to play 36 holes on Sunday and the final round was held on Monday.
Unfortunately, Monday's forecast also has the possibility of rain, though thunderstorms aren't a part of the equation as of yet.
We can only hope Mother Nature offers a reprieve that allows play to continue longer than meteorologists predict.
As much as we love the Masters, no one wants this to turn into a five or six-day event. Likewise, I'd like to see players at their best each day. If they are forced to pull a double, the quality of play could be compromised.
We'll soon see what hand the weather plays in the 2013 Masters.
