Masters 2013: Underrated Golfers Who Will Shine at Augusta National

Patrick ClarkeApr 11, 2013

All eyes will be on Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson this April at Augusta National Golf Club, as the two favorites and last year's champion dominate the pre-tournament storylines.

A four-time winner here, Tiger has a history of stealing the show at the Masters, while his rival, McIlroy, certainly has the potential to do just that this spring. But don't expect the world's top two players to be the only ones vying for a green jacket this weekend.

Below we'll break down a trio of underrated golfers who will shine at the year's first major.

Graeme McDowell, 50-1 Odds

Graeme McDowell was a consistent performer at each of last year's four major tournaments, recording top-10 finishes at the U.S. Open and British Open. He finished 12th at the 2012 Masters.

While the 2010 U.S. Open champion is flying way under the radar coming into Thursday's opening round, he shouldn't be counted out. Before his struggles at the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks ago, McDowell actually posted three consecutive top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Doral.

McDowell currently ranks fourth in driving accuracy this year (70.9 percent) and while his odds to win aren't spectacular, if G-Mac can remain confident in his swing this week, he'll be headed for a strong finish.

Round 1 Tee Time: 9:50 a.m. ET

Padraig Harrington, 60-1 Odds

A three-time major winner, veteran Padraig Harrington is coming off a solid top-10 performance at the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio this past weekend.

Harrington finished tied for eighth at the 2012 Masters and has four top-10s there since 2002. Based on what we've seen from Harrington at Augusta in the past, if he can survive Friday's second-round cut, he'll likely be contending for a green jacket on Sunday.

One thing is for sure, the 41-year-old isn't going to shy away from the pressure this weekend. Like McDowell, he's been under the microscope in the final round of a major before and has survived.

Round 1 Tee Time: 10:56 a.m. ET

Peter Hanson, 80-1 Odds

Swedish star Peter Hanson had a strong year in 2012, finishing tied for third at the Masters and seventh at the PGA Championship last summer.

Hanson has just one top-10 this year, but he came on strong in the final round at the Valero Texas Open last weekend, shooting a six-under 66 on Sunday to finish three-under for the tournament. Look for that momentum to carry over to the season's first major, where Hanson will play with little pressure considering his long odds to win.

No, Hanson may not be a name that jumps off the PGA money list or the world rankings, but there's certainly something to say for a guy who has three top-10 finishes at the past seven major tournaments.

Round 1 Tee Time: 9:39 a.m. ET
