Is Tiger Woods Running Out of Time to Capture Another Major Championship?

Brian MaziqueJun 8, 2018

Tiger Woods isn't in a desperate situation as it relates to winning another major championship.

Because anything involving Woods is cause for frantic reaction, analysis and boundless forecasting, we tend to overreact to what he does and doesn't do on a golf course.

It is true that it has been nearly five years since he won a major, but that's just a considerably long time for him, not for most players that have played the game.

As the owner of 14 major championships, the obvious goal for Woods is—and always will be—Jack Nicklaus' 18 major titles.

Woods is only 37 years old, so he has at least five-to-six years before his ability to perform at a high level fades. Nicklaus won his last major at the age of 46.

Arnold Palmer was the runner-up at the PGA Championship a month before he turned 41, finishing just two-strokes behind Dave Stockton in 1970.

Nick Faldo won his last major just before he turned 39.

Greg Norman won the Open Championship at 38 and was a runner-up to Faldo in 1996 at the age of 41. Norman collapsed after seemingly blowing away the competition through the first three days of play.

The failure was all mental and had nothing to do with age or time.

All of these legendary players proved they could be competitive into their late 30s and early 40s. We could easily make the case that Woods is superior to all of them—sans Nicklaus—and some would argue that he is a cut above the Golden Bear in regards to his overall skill level.

Were it not for the personal issues and injury woes, per Michael C. Jones of Yahoo, that led up to this major-championships drought, Woods would likely have equaled or surpassed Nicklaus' hallowed record by now.

Even with the stumbling blocks, Woods has time to not only win another major, but Nicklaus' record is still within his reach.

All it takes is one win in a major championship to get the ball rolling again for Woods.

Having already tallied three wins this year and having regained the world's No. 1 ranking, per Shane Bacon of Yahoo! Sports, Woods is in a great position to make a dent in the deficit between he and Nicklaus.

If by some stretch Woods is 40 years old and still stuck on 14 major championships, I'd say he's done playing on an elite level.

But it is too early to speculate about him running out of time?

The talk of Woods possibly never winning another major could be over soon. He could switch that talk to how many more majors will he win with a victory at Augusta this month.

Like the Nike ad says, "Winning takes care of everything," per Kyle Porter of CBS Sports.
