Monique Lamoureux-Kolls Ready for the Next Challenges in Her Career
Along with her sister Jocelyne, Monique Lamoureux-Kolls comprise a one-two scoring punch for a United States team eager to avenge their loss in the gold medal game at the 2012 IIHF Women’s Worlds. As Canada has never lost a gold medal match in the IIHF Worlds on Canadian soil, the two are hoping to make history at the 2013 World’s in the Canadian capital of Ottawa.
The first game of the IIHF Women’s Worlds was a visceral loss in a shootout to Canada. “I thought we did good. In this tournament, you need a quick turnaround. You take what you can and move on. It is no good to dwell.”
During the second game of the IIHF Worlds (a victory over Finland), Lamoureux-Kolls was named Player of the Game for the United States. “I played pretty well, but we have to play our game collectively. The third period was our best, we had 21 shots. We have to work towards playing a whole 60 minutes. We can show what we can be as a team.”
Of note, one of Finland’s players, Michelle Karvinen, was a teammate of the Lamoureux sisters at the University of North Dakota. “We actually played together before college. We have a good friendship with Michelle. When you play against her, it is like any other game. They are opponents at that point, but after the game, there are no hard feelings. The friendship continues.”
Along with her sister Jocelyne, the two participate on a line with Kendall Coyne. “Playing on a line with her is fun. Kendall has world class speed. My sister and I can’t keep up with her sometimes. The speed is unbelievable when she gets going. She is a smart player that adds a different dynamic to the lineup.”
With the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, the 2012-13 season was the final one. In graduating from the program, it was an emotional moment in her storied career, “It was tough, especially with the pride we have in the program. After North Dakota, it is never easy to be done with something (like that). We have to focus on our upcoming year, and there are new challenges for us.”
