Anderson Silva Lives to Fight Another Day!

Dorothy WillisApr 19, 2009

Many people are already lobbing stones at Anderson Silva for winning what they believe was a lackluster fight with Thales Leites.

Well, fellow MMA fighter Chuck Liddell would have simply been happy if he had won his own fight with Shogun Rua in any fashion.

Why can't everyone just be happy?

No one can fight and come out on top forever.

Witness Chuck Liddell tonight. His boss and best buddy, Dana White, threatened to retire him if his fight tonight did not dazzle White.

From the moment Chuck entered the ring, on weight but looking like a dumpy old man well past his glory days, I doubted that he would be "dazzling" anyone...especially White.

So for Anderson to win and be able to come back and fight again another day, breaking Matt Hughes' record for the number of consecutive wins, and retaining the Middleweight belt in the process; well, who could ask for more?

Apparently, a lot of folks, from the early reports of the fights as related on the Internet.

Many have applauded Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida for his fighting style of avoidance and counter striking. It is a masterful, if boring technique, or so I have been told.

So, okay, Anderson has taken a page from his best friend's game book. Why all the grumbling? He used the best game plan and won. It is over.

But the repercussions, knowing UFC boss Dana White, are not over.

Dana is sure to bitch and moan that Silva did not put on a good enough fight. Yeah he won, but not the way the big boss wanted. He was not "dazzled."

Well tough sh*t, Dana!

When Anderson desired one simple thing (to fight with Roy Jones Jr.), Dana nixed it and ended up with Silva resigning for six fights and one more year in the UFC and then retirement so he can still fight his idol and live out his dream.

Dana had a dilemma: how to best use the remaining fights.

There was the fight last year in Chicago with Patrick Cote.

Dana was not impressed with Anderson's performance.

Being very critical of Silva, Dana refused to allow him to fight on the card for UFC 91, as Anderson had wanted to quickly avenge his loss on the next contender.

Imagine two ends of a spectrum with Anderson Silva wanting his next fights to be two months apart and BJ Penn desiring fights only two times a year, with those being eight to ten months apart. And Penn wanted to defend two belts!!! How ludicrous!

Well, Dana has held Anderson off for quite a few months before giving him this fight. I can't say that I blame Silva for fighting a smart fight regardless of what Dana wants.

Thales was totally outclassed by a more skillful fighter and did minimal damage at best.

Leites was shown to not be up to the task of taking out the champion; so now Anderson has four fights left until he has his freedom back, to be able to live his own destiny.

In the long run, Dana White may live to rue his decision to fail to keep Mr. Anderson Silva happy.

I do not blame Silva one bit and congratulate him on his win.

It feels good to know he will be fit and ready to fight again another day.
