NCAA Tournament 2013 Scores: Biggest Surprises from Day 5 of Tourney
Day 5 of the 2013 NCAA tournament produced some pretty interesting scores.
The Wichita State Shockers shocked us all again with their victory over top-seeded overall Gonzaga. That upset tops the headlines from Saturday’s scores, but there were some other surprises, too.
Let’s take a look at what else sneaked up on us on Day 5.

Report: Biggest Spenders in Men's CBB 🤑
(9) Wichita State 76, (1) Gonzaga 70
No longer in the Cinderella role, the Gonzaga Bulldogs fell victim to one in the third round of this year’s tournament. The Shockers poured it on thick, building a 12-point lead early and answering a late run by the Zags with five straight three-pointers to seal the upset.
The Zags looked slow and uninspired while avoiding becoming the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated by a No. 16 seed a couple of days ago against Southern University.
That performance carried over to Saturday, though, and the Bulldogs were unable to avoid the upset again.
(4) Michigan 78, (5) VCU 53
The Michigan Wolverines weren’t expected to make too many waves in the NCAA tournament after a poor showing at the Big Ten tournament and a season in which they largely underperformed.
Those ideas are slowly slipping away after they routed a very good VCU team during the third round of the tourney.
The Wolverines got a career day out of forward Mitch McGary, who dropped 21 points and hauled in 14 rebounds. They got productive performances out of all of their stars, too, and dominated in transition to run away from the Rams.
(12) Oregon 74, (4) Saint Louis 57
Perhaps the Pac-12 tournament champion Oregon Ducks took offense to the 12th seed they were given heading into the NCAA tourney. That might help explain their tenacity on the court while rattling off two consecutive upsets to reach the round of 16.
The Ducks’ Saturday win over Saint Louis seemed like a lot of things, but the word "upset" didn’t come to mind. Oregon blasted out to a 16-point halftime lead and never gave the Billikens a shot to contend.
Perhaps the biggest surprising factor here is the fact that these Ducks were underestimated so badly despite finishing the season on a high note. They are clearly playing their best basketball at the right time and could continue to surprise.
