Injury Bug Bites The Celtics
It was reported by the Boston Herald that their star Power Forward Kevin Garnett will most likely missed the entire post season. This comes after Garnett missed the remaining several games due to a strained tendon and muscle in his right knee. The presence of Garnett will be missed by the Celtics as they make their run for a second consecutive NBA championship.
KG, as he is often referred to, was part of the "Big Three" that Boston had acquired in the offseason after the 2006-2007 NBA Season. He, along with the other Big Three, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce were supposed to help the Celtics win their 17th Championship in the franchise's history which was accomplished last year, which was the first year these three superstars had played on the same team. It now looks like they won't be able to capture a second together with this injury note, as many teams in both Conferences have been a lot better this season which makes it more difficult for any team to win the title.
Doc Rivers, the head coach of the Boston Celtics was able to tell that something was wrong with Garnett at the morning practice today after Garnett was only "two-steps" into his run. Rivers had this to say to the media today after the news had been announced: "It’s not official, but it’s official as far as I’m concerned. He looked better last week than he did today. This came out of left field, honestly, but he’s done everything he can to try and get back on the floor."
Garnett is the type of player that will try his best under any circumstances no matter if he is healthy or not. When Garnett has to sit out a game or so means that something is definitely not right. Especially to miss the entire post season unless the Boston Celtics make it far enough so Garnett can heal, but without him to defend, rebound and score it only makes it that much more difficult for the Celtics to do so in the very competitive Eastern Conference.
His teammates are well aware of the news and know that if they want to make it anywhere this season they will have to step up in his place. The Boston Celtics will still be a threatening team to whoever steps on the court, its just a matter of learning to play without their leader.
When all is said and done, the Celtics have to face the music of Garnett not being able to do what he does best on the court but he will be there on the sidelines doing whatever he can to cheer the team. This will be starting Saturday when his Boston Celtics take on the top draft pick in the 2008 NBA draft in Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls at the TD Banknorth Garden. With Garnett out, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce will have to carry the rest of the team on their backs as they hope to impress. If the Celtics want to be "on top of the world" at the end of the NBA finals, everything must go the Celtics way.
