NCAA Tournament 2013: Cinderellas with the Best Chance to Reach Final Four

Jeremy FuchsJun 8, 2018

Every year, a team comes out of nowhere to shock the world. In the 2013 NCAA tournament, that will not change.

There are plenty of potential Cinderellas. Which of those teams could find a shoe that fits and take it all the way to the Final Four?

Read on to find out.

Oregon

The Ducks are not a true Cinderella, not after winning the Pac-12 Championship.

But they are a No. 12 seed, and they would be the underdogs in most of their games. They were dominant against a good Oklahoma State team and now face a tough Saint Louis team.

One of the best ways to win in the tournament is to play good defense. Oregon was able to hold star Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart to only 14 points.

What's more, guard Dominic Artis had four steals and was instrumental in slowing down Smart. They were also dominant on the glass, out-rebounding Oklahoma State by 44-30. Fourteen of those rebounds were offensive.

Arsalan Kazemi showed what a dominant rebounder he can be, as he picked up 17.

Twelve-seeds are usually not 27-8, and they are usually one of the last teams selected for the tournament. Oregon proved against Oklahoma State that they were woefully underseeded.

St. Louis is a trendy Final Four pick, but Oregon is hot. The Ducks have won four in a row and six out of their last eight. Oregon scored about three more points per game and also grabs four more rebounds per game than Saint Louis.

The Billikens don't have a rebounder who can match up with Kazemi. Dwayne Evans, who averages nearly eight boards a game, does not have the size or strength to bang with Kazemi.

If the Ducks can control the glass, then they'll be able to dictate the tempo. That works in Oregon's favor because it will allow them to involve leading scorer E.J. Singler more; Singler had only eight points against Oklahoma State.

Oregon is in the tough Midwest region, so if they do get past St. Louis, they would have to face such teams like Louisville, Duke and Michigan State. That's not an easy task.

That said, the Ducks are a hot team with the right combination of scoring and rebounding to make a run. It would not be a surprise if Oregon shocked the world and made a Final Four run.

Ole Miss

Ole Miss beat Wisconsin by a score of 57-46 in the round of 64, and they have the chance to take advantage of the busted bracket in the West.

Ole Miss rode leading scorer Marshall Henderson, who scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, to a comeback and the upset over the Badgers.

The Rebels can score with the best of them. They have the seventh-ranked offense in the nation, scoring 78.2 points per game.

They've also shown they can play defense. They held Wisconsin to just one field goal in the last seven minutes and only allowed the Badgers to shoot 25.4 percent from the floor.

Despite being a No. 12 seed, Ole Miss has beaten some really good teams. They won the SEC Championship over Florida, and they have quality wins against Missouri. They finished 12-6 in SEC play.

The Rebels will go as far as Marshall Henderson takes them. If he can continue to score at a high pace, and if the Rebels can defend with the same intensity they did against Wisconsin, then they have a shot to play in Atlanta.

The West region is a bit of an unknown right now. Gonzaga struggled against Southern, barely holding on for a victory, while No. 3 seed New Mexico was eliminated. That makes Ole Miss's path to Atlanta just a little bit easier.

With high-octane scoring and improving defense, Ole Miss could easily find its way to Atlanta.

Temple

Temple beat North Carolina State in the second round by a score of 76-72.

They were led by star guard Khalif Wyatt, who scored 31 points in the win. He's averaged nearly 20 points a game on the season.

One of the maxims in picking tournament teams is to pick a team with a star player. Wyatt certainly fits that bill. Just like Kemba Walker led UConn to a title a few years ago, Wyatt has the same talent to take over a game and score at will.

Temple was also able to beat some good teams in Syracuse, VCU and La Salle.

While they rely on Wyatt for the most part, Scootie Randall provides nice secondary scoring, averaging nearly 12 points per game. Their offense as a whole is quite good, averaging 72.8 points per game.

The Owls will have to rely on Wyatt if they want to make a run to Atlanta. Teams will try to limit him as much as possible.

But that's what happened with Kemba Walker, and he rode all the double-teams to a NCAA title.

If Wyatt can keep up this pace, then Indiana needs to watch out for Temple in the round of 32.
